A TRALEE swimmer has won a silver medal at the Irish Youth / Open Swimming Championships. Christopher Kelly Rogers from Ballyseedy, Tralee came second to claim the silver medal in the 400m Freestyle event at the Championships held last weekend in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin.
Kelly Rogers, who has just completed his Leaving Cert examinations in the Tralee CBS The Green, has been a member of the Kingdom Swimming Club for over seven years, and also trains with the Munster Swim Squad at the University of Limerick.
He finished second in the 400m freestyle event in a time of 4 minutes 16 seconds, and he also competed in the 100 Freestyle and 100 Breast stroke and made the final of the 200m Freestyle where he finished in fifth place.
The Irish Youth / Open Championships have competitors from all over Ireland, including members of the 2012 High Performance squads and also had guest swimmers from South Africa, Egypt, France and Edinburgh.
Overall this was an excellent performance by the Tralee man, who had to combine his training this year with studying for the Leaving Cert. However, he was greatly supported by the Kingdom Swimming Club and especially his coach Ger McDonnell who was always on hand with words of encouragement.
Christopher's hard work and dedication to this sport paid off this weekend and he now turns his attention to competing in two triathalon events in Kerry in August.
