Wednesday February 17 2010
THREE Kerry sides Castleisland, Listowel Celtic and Killarney Athletic will be taking the county flag into the last 32 in the Umbro FAI Junior Cup next Sunday with all three having home ties.
The biggest junior soccer competition in the world it started out with over 700 teams and now this has been reduced to the last 32 and it is a great honour for the KDL to still have three clubs still left in contention.
Lisselton Rovers went to the last 16 last year but bowed out to an Athlone side after a great run.
While home advantage will give a boost to all three sides they are facing daunting opposition but when you come to this stage of the competition that is par for the course.
The three games kick off at 2pm on Sunday and here's hoping that all three will make it through to the last 16.
Killarney Athletic have a very good chance of progressing against College Corinthians. Castleisland play up to scratch they could overcome Courtown Hibs but it will be a surprise of gigantic proportions if Listowel Celtic can oust Fairview Rangers.
But, one can never say never in cup competitions and everyone will be keeping their fingers crossed for the Fealesiders. Castleisland v Courtown
Hibs (Wexford) CASTLEISLAND host Courtown Hibs from Wexford who knocked Dublin side Lower Crumlin out of the competition.
They were runners-up in the Premier division in Wexford last season and are going very well again this year.
However, Castleisland boss Edmund Hartnett will have his side well motivated for the game and will use their home pitch to their advantage.
"We know we are really up against it but we will be giving it our best shot and with all players fit for the game we aim to do ourselves justice." Listowel Celtic v Fairview
Rangers (Limerick) LISTOWEL Celtic also have a tall order as they entertain Fairview Rangers from Limerick who are a very formidable side.
The Limerick side have won the FAI Junior Cup title on seven occasions their last victory was in 2004 and last year they won the Munster Junior cup title.
With this type of pedigree Listowel face a daunting task but with the side leading the way in Premier A they are used to winning games of late so they will not be overawed by the opposition.
A young side that play an opening exciting brand of football managers Seanie Lynch and Aiden O'Connor will have them well siked up for the big game and they are always difficult to beat at Pat Kennedy Park. Killarney Athletic v College
Corinthians (Cork) WOODLAWN is the venue for the clash of Killarney Athletic and College Corinthians who defeated Killarney Celtic with a 90th minute goal two weeks ago.
Athletic are coming into this game on a roll going very well in the league and now enjoying a great cup run.
They will have seen College Corinthians play Killarney Celtic and they must be impressed by what they saw. The Cork side are very strong and physical and distribute the ball very well.
Athletic co-manager Shane Kelly says that Athletic will not be overawed by their credentials and will be going into the game full of confidence.
" We are going true a great spell at present but we will keep our feet on the ground as we know it will take a huge effort to overcome this Cork side.
"We are unlucky that we will with without our influential centre half David Looney for the big game as he will be in America," Kelly added.
