Dynamos brave comeback comes undone by Ramblers injury-time goals
IN a game in which Cobh Ramblers seemed to be coasting to victory when they held a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes to go this encounter turned into the most dramatic of conclusions with Tralee Dynamos coming back from the dead to equalise and then losing the game courtesy of injury-time goals by the Corkonians.
From the very start of this game it was obvious that Cobh Ramblers did not come to make up the numbers as they dominated the game in the opening half giving Dynamos very little possession.
The young and energetic Cork side ruled the roost at midfield and left Dynamos chasing shadows for the opening half hour.
Jamie Spillane went past the Dynamos defence like a dose of epsom salts but he fluffed his shot and then Emmet O'Halloran looping shot hit the top of the crossbar and went over.
A rare break and a great ball by James Sugrue almost put Aaron Houlihan in for Dynamos but he was beaten by the advancing Cobh goalie.
Then Uros Ivkovic gained possession close to the side line and crossed to Paul Russell but his effort was saved by the Cobh keeper.
Then Cobh had a few openings with J P O'Halloran and Gary Collins going close and then just a minute from the break Cobh went ahead.
Dan Stack set the wheels in motion with an accurate over the top ball that Pierse Donnaghy was onto in a flash and with Dynamos custodian advancing to cut the angle he calmly flicked the ball with the outside of his right foot to steer it home.
Dynamos self belief began to grow in the second half as they exposed the vulnerability of the Cobh defence to high balls into the box.
However their prospects seemed very pessimistic on the hour mark when Jamie Murphy caught the Dynamos defence napping and his great cross was finished in great style by Pierse Donnaghy to put Cobh in a very comfortable position.
However, Dynamos got right back into the game in the 75th minute when a great cross by Eddie Duggan finding sub Bryan Murphy and he sent a dipping header over the advancing goalie for a super goal.
Unbelievably five minutes later the sides were level when Dynamos forced a corner out on the right which was whipped in by James Sugrue and Maurice O'Rahilly headed home and now Dynamos were the more likely side to win the game with Cobh flabbergasted at losing a 2-0 lead.
With three minutes on the clock Dynamos almost went ahead when Bryan Murphy released James Sugrue and his powerful shot was saved by the Cobh keeper. Maurice O'Rahilly (left) and Brian Murphy who were Tralee Dynamos goal scorers in their 4-2 defeat to Cobh Ramblers in the Newstalk 'A' Championship at the weekend. Brian Murphy is now the holder of a unique record of scoring on both his League of Ireland debuts. He scored against Limerick Under 20s last week on his debut and last Sunday scored on his 'A' championship debut against Cobh Rambers.
Then as the game moved into injury it looked like a share of the spoils would be the outcome which would be a good result for Dynamos given the circumstances.
However Dynamos concentration let them down in the 92nd minute when a Dan Stack corner was headed out by Eoin Cassidy but it fell to John Paul O'Halloran just inside the box and he sent a scorching volley to the roof of the net.
Shortly after the kick off Dynamos engaged on sloppy defending which was capitalised upon by sub Alan O'Flynn and he applied a clinical finish to give his side a dramatic victory.
For Dynamos they will rue surrendering the game so late and now know that they have a hard road ahead of them in their A championship campaign this year.
