THE Division 1 Ladies and Men's doubles championships were hosted by Listowel Badminton Club on Friday last in Listowel. This was a historical occasion for the Listowel club as it was the first time that the Division 1 championships were held there.
The ladies final was between the sister combination and defending champions Breda O'Mahony/Eileen O'Connor (Killarney) and the youthful pairing of Edel Broderick (Kingdom)/Ciara O'Connor (Dingle). This was a two-set encounter with O'Mahony/O'Connor taking the first set 21-17. The second set was extremely close also but the experience of O'Mahony/O'Connor secured them their seventh ladies doubles title, 21-19.
The men's final was an all Kingdom Club affair with Gio Gaudino/ Michael Crossan doing battle against Tom Bourke/Billy Lacey. This was a three-set match with Gaudino/Crossan taking the first 21-10, and Bourke/Lacey winning the second 21-15. In the deciding set Gaudino/ Crossan retrieved their first set form and secured their Division 1 Men's Doubles Championship title with a 21-13 win. This was Michael Crossan's first Division 1 County Championship title and much deserved.
The Division 3/5 Ladies and Men's Doubles County Championships were played in Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday last, with titles going to Killarney and Moyvane.
In the Division 5 ladies final it was the Killarney duo of Maeve Twomey/ Yvonne Eadie who had victory over the Ballyheigue partnership of Paula O'Sullivan/Lynda Burke. This is Maeve's second title of the season having already won the Ladies Singles title.
The Division 5 Men's title was won by Timmy Hanrahan/Paul Kennelly of Moyvane. In the final they beat Eldomon Matthews/ Lloyd Ambraham (County).
Killarney's second title of the day was won in the Division 3 Men's Final, where John O'Brien/ Wayne Doyle had a three set victory over the County Club pairing of Tom Clear/Don Ring.
The Moyvane partnership of Carmel Hudson/ Carolanne Warlow defeated Michelle Kearney/ Mairead O'Regan in the Division 3 Ladies Final to secure a second title for Moyvane.
Brewster Cup Competition
KERRY finished in third position in the Brewster Cup Competition which was held in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday last. They finished on a total of 22 points, with Waterford finishing second on 23pts. The winners were Tipperary on 25 points. This was a very closely contested competition and everything hinged on the last matches of the day. Five of the Munster teams participated, with Clare being unable to field a team. The Kerry team produced a brave performance and cannot be faulted for effort.
Overall the Kerry players gave a committed and solid performance under the Management of Mary Falvey and Junior Griffin.
The squad was Ciara O'Connor (Dingle), Peggy Horan, Jennifer Keane, Eileen O'Connor (Killarney) Brid Murphy (Kingdom); Gio Gaudino, Michael Crossan (Kingdom), Paudie Horan, Sean Murphy, Fred Klok (Killarney), Mike O'Connor
