Sean Lacey wins cycling's Lacey Cup
THE first major cycling race of the year in Kerry was a family affair as Sean Lacey won the Cup named in honour of his grandfather Tim. This was the second successive year Sean won the race, a testing 75kilometre circuit from Blennerville out to West Kerry and back to Tralee via Inch and Castlemaine.
The race, which was run off on a handicap basis, produced a very exciting spring finish with Lacey, Paul Griffin and Sean Barrett eventually closing the gap on the early leaders, with Lacey leading home the trio in a sprint finish. Lacey has switched from the local Earl of Desmond team to a new Cork based team, The Edge Racing, and was popular winner for his new team.
Lacey had previously competed with the Dublin based club EuroBaby/ EuroCycles, but moved to the Cork team this season.
Tralee rider Paul Griffin was second with Daniel Clifford, Killorglin Credit Union CC, sixth.
