Marys win battle of the Saints in Men's Cup final

MEN'S DIVISION ONE CUP FINAL St Marys 77 St Brendans 67 ST BRENDAN'S got the ball from the jump but couldn't finish the basket so St Mary's punished by getting two quick baskets before St Brendan's scored their first from Semlius Harcinkavicius.

St Mary's were playing well offensively and were leading 94 after five minutes so they made a four-man substitution.

John Teahan was on fire scoring two three-pointers and a basket in quick succession. Semlius for Brendan's was keeping them alive working tirelessly under the boards. St Marys were still holding the upper hand with 8 points up. Again Semlius for St Brendan's in the dying seconds of this quarter shot up a beautiful three-pointer to leave five points between the sides in favour of St Mary's.

Jamie Lohan opened the scoring for St Brendan's followed by a steal to leave 1 point between the two sides. Again John Teahan showed his class with another three baskets for St Mary's with no reply. St Mary's were well on top in this quarter scoring 18 points in total. St Brendan's finding it hard to break through the solid defence of St Mary's. Liam Culloty helped reduce the gap by scoring a threepointer to leave the score 39-27 at half time.

StMary's again had most of the play in this quarter with Niall Murphy opening the scoring. St Brendan's never gave up and kept playing good open play - this paid off in the last few minutes of this quarter where they had most of the play. Liam Culloty scoring two threepointer followed by three more baskets without reply leaving the score 5844 to St Mary's.

St Mary's proved too strong for St Brendan's throughout this game. Again they came out strongest after the restart and got five points before Daniel Moynihan scored a three-pointer for St Brendan's. The game was never slow of pace as both teams were giving it their all. Mary's kept putting up the scores with ease while St Brendan's found it hard to break through the St Mary's defence.

It was in the last four minutes that St Brendan's came alive again with nice baskets from Andrew Fitzgerald and Semlius. Score now 76-61 with a minute left. Niall Murphy then took the ball out of his defence and stopped up on the three-point line to shoot in a fabulous outside shot and did the same thing 30 seconds later to leave 10 between the sides.

This was to be the last score of the game however; St Mary's taking the glory for the second time with a final score of 77-67.
