THE first of the Top Part County Championship titles were decided at Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday last, with Singles titles being divided between Killarney, Kingdom, Moyvane and Listowel.

Killarney Club had a great start to the day, taking both Ladies and Men's Singles titles in Division 5. In the ladies it was Glenflesk girl, Maeve Twomey, who in her first year in senior competition, took the ladies title defeating Brigid McCarthy of Moyvane 21/15, 21/12.

This was followed by a fantastic win by Padraig McCarthy in the Men's Singles Final. Padraig reached the final having a tremendous three set defeat over Kenmare's Joe Harrington. Padraig's opponent in the final was Timmy Hanrahan of Moyvane and this he won in two sets 21/11, 21/15.

The Division 3 ladies final was an all Listowel club encounter between Mairead Regan and Michelle Kearney. It was Mairead Regan who took the title on a scoreline of 21/13, 21/19. The Division 3 Men's final was between Donie Enright (Moyvane) and Kieran Gibbons (Listowel) having beaten two County Club men in their semi-finals, Don Ring and Tom Clear.

The final was a three set contest with Donie taking the first set well at 21/11. However, the Listowel man fought back in the second set taking it 21/19. The deciding set went the way of the Moyvane man taking it 21/12 and the Divsion 3 men's title.

In Division 1 it was the two defending champions that retained their titles and both from Kingdom Club. The ladies singles final was a repeat of last year's final with Edel Broderick (Kingdom) up against Killarney's, Eileen O'Connor. The first set was close, but it was Broderick who edged in front and took it 21/19.

The second set was won by Edel 21/13. The Divsion 1 Men's Final was between two Kingdom club mates, the title holder Tom Bourke and Gio Gaudino. Bouke was in total control in the first set winning it 21/4 and again in the second set he took comfortably 21/12.

Tom will now be looking forward to the weekend ahead with the Munster Senior Championship being held in Killarney and from the form shown by him in the County Championships he will be a force to be reckoned with.
