Strong finish sees Ballyduff through

IT was billed as the game of the weekend, but this game really didn't live up to expectations at all. For a clash between two of the top three contenders for the title the lack of bite and of urgency was more than a little disappointing. The fact either team could lose and still win this title must surely have had an effect on the psychology of two teams for whom knock-out hurling is, most obviously, king.

Kilkenny club wins U-14 hurling tournament in Dingle

DINGLE hosted the inaugural Inter-county Club U14 Hurling Tournament last Saturday. Proceedings got underway at 11am and the participating teams were the South Kerry U-14 Divisional Squad, James Stephens from Kilkenny, Newtownshandrum from Cork and Latin Cullen from Tipperary.

WELL nobody saw that coming. Not after twenty minutes were played at least, or if we're being really really honest not even at half-time. Crotta O'Neills were dead and buried. Causeway were surely cruising into the next round. They had just rattled in 4-5 almost without reply. They were leading by thirteen points. And yet... and yet ... Crotta won this game.

ABBEYDORNEY and Ballyduff emerged victorious at the North Kerry Under 10 hurling blitz competitions, which went ahead very successfully at Ardfert on Thursday last. All eight clubs in the division competed. In the Division 1 Final, Abbeydorney beat Causeway by 3-2 to 1-5. Winning captain was Cillian Spillane who received the John O'Gorman Memorial Shield from Pat Dineen, North Kerry Board Fixtures Secretary. In Division 2, Ballyduff, captained by Dylan Robinson had a 1-1 to 1 goal win over St. Brendan's to win the Donal O'Flaherty Memorial Shield.

LAST year was a bit of a procession, wasn't it? Kilmoyley barely had to break sweat during the championship. There was a bit of drama in the first round when Ballyduff really put it up to them in the first half in Austin Stack Park, but in the second half the reigning champs took over.

ST BRENDANS V BALLYHEIGUE: Friday at 7pm. ST Brendans finished last season as the second best team in the county. As such they're entitled to the favourites tag for this first round clash with Ballyheigue. The final didn't go the way they would have wanted it to against Kilmoyley, but definite progress was made during the season. They remain what they were last season a very solid defensive side, with not a bad attack – even if it was frustrated against Kilmoyley.

St Pats find Austin Stacks hard rock to crack

ST Pats travelled to Connolly Park on Wednesday last for Round 3 of the County JHL, but Austin Stacks, in the end, had a comprehensive 2-16 to 2-6 victory. Two goals from Pat Clifford saw the visitors on level terms at the break, 26 each, but with the ever freshening breeze to their back in the second half, Stacks tacked on the points to run out deserving winners. St Pats play Kenmare in Fossa on this Wednesday night at 8pm.

Causeway claim first title since 2003 on home soil SO much for summer hurling, eh? This was more like October than July. The rain pelted down, a gale blew across the pitch and as the minutes ticked down it just got darker and darker. Needless to say the conditions didn't exactly lend themselves to quality hurling and while, yes, it was low scoring and while, yes, the quality wasn't the best there was something about this game that meant you couldn't take your eyes off it for one moment.

HEADING up last Saturday it was hard to know what to expect. Was this going to be the day Kerry finally made a meaningful breakthrough in hurling or was it just going to be another one of those horrible days when all seems lost? Having seen the team only once this year against Meath in the National League, one had some sense of their capabilities, but there has been something welcomingly different about the whole Kerry senior hurling set-up this year looking in from the outside.
