IT'S rare that the loser ends up being the star of the show, but that's precisely what Galway manager John McIntyre was after his side's heartbreaking defeat to Tipperary.
When he spoke after the match his voice cracked as he choked back the tears. As he spoke you got a sense of the man and what this group of players and what this defeat meant to him. All too often post and pre match comments from managers are banal recitations of cliché. Not so with McIntyre. The passion was all the more interesting considering the Lorrha man's Tipperary heritage.
The hope now must be that he stays in his job for at least another year. Galway as a hurling county has had more than its fair share of false dawns, but on this occasion McIntyre seems to be going about things the right way. When the took the job he dampened expectations, he knew he couldn't turn Galway into All Ireland contenders overnight.
Progress has been steady and while everyone involved will be hurting right now they should realise that they were only a puck of a ball away from the semifinal. Galway will come back stronger.
