Kilkenny club wins U-14 hurling tournament in Dingle

Wednesday July 28 2010

DINGLE hosted the inaugural Inter-county Club U14 Hurling Tournament last Saturday. Proceedings got underway at 11am and the participating teams were the South Kerry U-14 Divisional Squad, James Stephens from Kilkenny, Newtownshandrum from Cork and Latin Cullen from Tipperary.

The South Kerry squad was made up of players from Dingle, Dr. Crokes, Kenmare and Kilgarvan and they gave a very good account of themselves. All teams played each other and then we had a final between the top two teams. The games were fast and skilful and the weather was ideal for good hurling.

In these conditions there was some great points scored and some great teamwork displayed. Some of the touches and skills on show from all teams were magnificent and these skills belied the tender years of some of the players.

James Stephens showed why Kilkenny hurling is so string at present with a strong and very assured panel of players , however they did not get it all their own way and all of their opponents put up stern resistance, however they did prevail in all the qualifying games.

There were some real tight matches between Cork, Tipp and south Kerry and in the end it was the South Kerry boys who made it through to play James Stephens in the final. This was a good and intense game and the locals started well and carried the game to the opposition.

There were some great passages of play and the exchanges were fierce. At the short whistle the Kilkenny boys were settled into the game and had our measure with a few goals to spare.

The second half saw South Kerry â?“ with the aid or a breeze â?“ come more into it and some fine points reduced the deficit, however the Cats regrouped and pulled away for a comfortable victory in the end.

They were presented with the Garveys sponsored cup and medals and all participating teams received medals for their endeavours.

This tournament was a great success and will improve the image of hurling in south Kerry and the skill levels of our players. South Kerry Hurling Coiste na nOg would like to thanks all the participants and their clubs and mentors, the organisers, the referees, Garveys, our main sponsor, and the Dingle club for hosting this event.
