Which Irish men will be in line for Ryder Cup action?
Wednesday February 03 2010
WITH the Ryder Cup just under eight months away speculating is already beginning as to who will make up the team to face the Americans at Celtic Manor in Wales, but for the moment I am more interested in how many Irish players will tee it up against the Yanks.
Padraig Harrington will be there for sure as will Rory McIlroy, but are there any others in with a shout? Darren Clarke or Graeme McDowell could make it or what about Shane Lowry? It may not be the fairy tale that you might think. The young Offaly man after a tentative start in the paid ranks, has shown this year that he has the game and the temperament to mix it with the best.
In five events this season he has picked up a total of € 105,000 to lie in fifteenth place in the European money list and his first win as a professional cannot be far away.
Clarke is three places above Lowry in twelfth spot with € 132,000 while McDowell is back in 72nd place having just played two events, but I would expect that to change drastically in the coming weeks.
We shall watch in great anticipation as the season unfolds to see how many of the Irish will force their way into the reckoning.
