Peggy Horan succeeds Pigott as East Kerry Board secretary
THE annual Convention of East Kerry Board, held in the Killarney Heigjhts Hotel on Thursday, January 19, saw Peggy Horan of Glenflesk take over as Secretary in succession to Mike Pigott who retired under the five year rule.
Peggy previously was Scor Officer of the Board a number of years ago and will bring her vast experience gained as Secretary of Coiste na nóg Chiarraí to the task of Secretary in East Kerry. Mike Pigott was elected as Assistant Secretary to the Board and he received ful;some praise for his handling of affairs over the past five years. The clubs also voted approval for three new vice presidents – John Kelly Spa, Pat Sweeney Fossa and Pat Favier Glenflesk all of whom served the Board with distinction as Chairman in their time.
All other officers were returned unopposed as follows: Chairman Dermot Griffin, Vice Chairman Tim Ryan, Treasurer Pat Delaney Assistant Treasurer Pat Doyle, PRO Pat O'brien,hurling Officer John Ryan, Scor Officer Mary Philpott.
Paudie Breen was appointed Chairman Bord na nóg and Tim Ryan as Chairman of the Referees Committee. Johnny Brosnan was appointed Chairman of the CCC the members of which will be Mike Pigott, Peggy Horan, Tadgh Fleming, Dermot O'mahony, Cait O'sullivan d'arcy, and Johnny Barry. Tributes were paid to Michael O'donoghue Glenflesk who stepped down from the CCC.
There were four motions dealt with. A motion from Dr Crokes to restructure the minor championship with an open draw in round 1 was withdrawn. The competition strength of clubs will be assessed following round 3 of the County Minor Leagues and teams seeded accordingly.
A motion from Dr Crokes to alter the format of the minor leagues and abolish the semi-finals was withdrawn in favour of an amendment whereby the top team will enter the final with home advantage with the second placed team having home advantage in a semi final with the third team.
A motion from Dr Crokes to increase the fee to € 100 for providing a neutral pitch for games was amended to € 60. A lengthy discussion was held on a Fossa motion to allow clubs competing in County Novice and Junior Championships enter their first fifteen players in the O'sullivan Cup Junior Championship.
Delegates agreed to have the Junior championship criteria examined and reported on before July and the delegates further agreed that any recommendations arising could be passed into the rule book at the subsequent monthly delegate meeting.
East Kerry All Stars
THE conclusion of the 2011 O'donoghue Cup sees preparations underway to host the East Kerry All Star Gala Night at the Brehaon Hotel in Killarney on Friday, February 10. The event will honour the top fifteen players from the O'donoghue Cup competition with an East Kerry All Star and a special presentation will be made to the Senior and Young Players of 2011.
The nominees for Hall of Fame and the East Kerry GAA Personality of 2011 will also be present. The All Star awards are sponsored by the Aquila Club at the Gleneagle and by The Kerryman newspaper. Former Offaly All-ireland winning manager and commentator on GAA affairs Eugene Mcgee will deliver a keynote address which no doubt will be thought provoking as only Eugene can be. Music will be provided by The Baker Boys and
