A TREMENDOUS week for Legion saw them put their County Championship troubles behind them with two victories in the space of five days giving them top spot in the table.

First, last Tuesday in a back game with Finuge, they edged out the North Kerry side by a single point with goals from Derek Pyne and Jonathon Lyne giving them a 2-5 to 0-4 advantage at the break.

Ray Galvin led a Finuge fightback with a goal as they hit 1-3 without reply to narrow the margin to two points. However both Shaun Keane and two David Murphy points settled the Killarney side as the best efforts of Maurice Corridan and Fergus Fitzmaurice couldn't prevent the visitors going down by 2-8 to 1-10.

At the weekend just past Legion had six points to spare over St Marys as despite trailing by 0-5 to 04 at the break, the Killarney side came good in the second period as two points for David Murphy sandwiched in between a Tim O'Regan effort put them three ahead before Nigel Shefflin's goal secured a 1-11 to 0-8 triumph.

Castlegregory's narrow two point defeat to Austin Stacks meant the West Kerry side failed to retake the initiative at the top of the table. They looked to be in the driving seat after Alan McNamara's goal gave them a 1-4 to 0-4 lead at the break but the 'Rockies' with William Kirby, David Mannix and Denis Costelloe excelling managed to turn the game around after the break and they hung on for a 0-13 to 1-8 victory that puts them firmly back in the promotion picture.

In a repeat of last year's Intermediate final Spa once again triumphed over Currow but the margin was far narrower than last year's encounter as Spa had only three points to spare at the finish. Spa led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break thanks to Niall O'Mahony and Cormac Cronin but the outstanding Ian Somers as well as Pa and Mike McCarthy brought the home side right back into it, with Mike 'Stam' O'Donoghue and Cronin keeping Spa 011 to 0-8 ahead until after seven minutes of injury time Currow had a potential equalising goal disallowed and Spa returned to Killarney with the points.

Castleisland Desmonds and Glenflesk was equally exciting as the home side hung on to emerge victorious by 1-11 to 1-9. Eric Nelligan's goal gave the home side the advantage as Kieran Brennan was working hard for Desmonds; however Evan Horan after scoring seven points by himself managed to direct a free into the net, however Glenflesk ran out of time in their search to take something from the game as the soon to be Celebrity Bainisteoir contestants moved out of the relegation zone with their second win of the year.

Also at the bottom Kilcummin picked up their first win of the campaign as they needed star forward DJ Fleming to pop over a sideline ball late in their game with Tarbert to secure a 0-12 to 0-8 victory. The North Kerry side had led through the efforts of Steven O'Connor and the Deenihan's Kieran and Stevie by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time but were then reduced to 14 men as Eamon O'Donoghue and John Devane galvanised Kilcummin with four frees from Fleming enough to finally record the East Kerry side's first win in the league and they host Castlegregory in the next round.

The Skellig Rangers versus Finuge fixture was postponed due to the Finuge players' involvement with Lixnaw in the County Hurling Championship last weekend and no date for a re-fixture has been set yet.
