SPEAKING just minutes after John O'Donoghue made his much publicised speech on Tuesday, Deputy Tom Sheahan used just one word to describe it – powerful. Yet he wasn't duly surprised at the intensity of its delivery.
"I expected a strong speech, after all he's a trained solicitor," the Glenbeigh native remarked.
Referring to the terminology used, the deputy said he was particularly drawn to the comment, 'this was done in weakness, not in malice'.
"He didn't hold back but I still think he should have been afforded due process.
"It points to the frailties of the system," Sheahan commented.
"We didn't get the whole story and we would have if he had gone before the commission. We have been denied that now."
And he commented that his political rival was hard done by.
"To be honest, if a lot of his remarks are looked into, then he was hard done by. One that stands out concerns the €12,000 figure that he claims was interparliamentary and divided amongst other colleagues. Figures like those were certainly unfair."
Commenting on the newly reopened three-seater constituency, Deputy Sheahan said that the move marks an open challenge, adding, "who knows what way things will go now but it will be interesting."
