A TALENTED Killorglin teen made history at the weekend by becoming the ever first classical guitarist to reach the final of the prestigious Killarney Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year 2010 competition, which he went on to win.
Tadhg Prendiville, a student of the Kingdom Music Academy, saw off extremely stiff competition from dozens of other musicians to take the title at the grand finale of the competition in Killarney on Sunday night.
Tadhg, who won the accolade as Killarney Rotary Club celebrates the contest's 10th birthday, wowed the adjudicators and audience alike with his rendition of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos' Prelude Number 2, which was written for the guitar.
The prestigious win came as a double boost to young Tadhg, who only a fortnight ago scooped the Cork County Classical Guitar Trophy at the Feis Mhaitiu in Cork.
The Rotary Club competition also saw Niall Crowley from Killarney — a contestant in the over-16 voice category — finish in second place, followed by Deirdre Glavin, Tralee, who won third prize for her performance on the oboe in the under-16 category.
Young Milltown musician, Ultan Lavery, shared joint fourth place with Caoimhe de Bhilis, Killarney. Ultan played piano in the over-16 category while Caoimhe was a voice contestant in the same age group.
Tralee student Caoimhe Glavin won sixth prize, for her excellent performance on the French horn in the under14 category.
