THEY couldn't have written away for a better day in Ballyheigue on Sunday, as the sun shone brightly for the local ploughing match on the lands of Diarmuid Lawlor, Ballymacquin.

The mild conditions on the day helped to attract a great crowd to the event, where some of Kerry's finest ploughmen provided great displays in eight disciplines.

Winners on the day included Colm Dineen (three furrow), Mike Halloran (U21), Thomas Healy (senior tractor), Cormac O'connor (U28) Maurice Quill (novice) Timmy Horan (vintage tractor) Moss Trant (horse class) and Tommy Mccarthy (reversible).

As well as some great competitions, Sunday's ploughing match also featured a great selection of side-show events and exhibitions, including threshing, sheaf tossing and modern and vintage machinery displays.

"It was a fabulous day and we had a huge turnout because of the fine weather," secretary JP Corridon told The Kerryman. "We'd just like to say a huge thanks to all the competitors, the people who came out to support us, our sponsors, and of course the landowner, Diarmuid Lawlor, without whose ongoing support we couldn't stage our event."

With Abbeydorney and Ballyheigue ploughing matches now complete, it's the turn of Ardfert this weekend. The event will take place this Sunday, February 5 on the lands of Michael Mccarthy, Ballymacquinn Uppr. Competitors are asked to register their participation with secretary Brendan Blackwell (086 3543831) before Thursday.
