OVER 200 people attended the Kerry Educaton Service (KES) annual student awards in Tralee on Friday at the Institute of Technology.

Guest of honour on the night was Olympic rower Paul Griffin, who presented awards to 42 exceptional students.

Paul is a former student of Killarney Community College and the Institute of Technology, Tralee.

The students represented the eight KES schools and four of the Kerry Youthreach centres.

Two Gold Medal Awards were presented this year to two students from Causeway Comprehensive School, Oisín Mulvihill and Seán O'Dwyer. The pair received the highest points in the Leaving Certificate 2009, obtaining the maximum possible 600 points.

These awards were presented by Cllr Jim Finucane, FG, who is Cathaoirleach of the Committee of KES.

"This is a special event for all involved in KES, as it celebrates the achievements of KES and Youthreach students and it is also an opportunity to praise the commitment and dedication of our teachers and Youthreach staff," said KES spokesperson Ann O'Dwyer.

"This event is about rewarding hard work and commitment in school and also voluntary participation in the community. Each student receiving an award has made a huge effort. KES believe that commitment and dedication is a great gift and we hope the students will bring this with them to all the challenges they face in the future, in their work, their further education and most importantly to their personal life," she said.

"We would like to congratulate all the students, teachers and parents and wish them great success in the future," Ann O'Dwyer said.
