ONE of the more solemn occasions marking the 50th anniversary of the Mountcollins and Brosna Angling Association took place on Sunday with the unveiling of a memorial at the scene of a tragic drowning in 1976.
Members of the club were present at the spot by the bridge over the Feale where the tragic drowning of Tim Fitzgerald took place in 1976. This marked the second unveiling of a memorial stone to members of the club who tragically lost their lives on the river — following the unveiling of an earlier stone to Willie O'Connor of Kilmanihan who died in 1968.
Brothers, Brendan, Pat and Jimmy Danaher of Mountcollins were the driving forces behind both memorials and each were thanked for their efforts at Sunday's ceremony.
"The sculptures are by James O'Connor of Brosna village and as well as beautifully commemorating Tim Fitzgerald and Willie O'Connor they add greatly to the river landscape," Mountcollins and Brosna Angling Association member Billy Downes said.
