Redundant workers still in limbo

WORKERS at a Tralee aluminium and PVC-fittings company who were told two weeks ago that they were being laid off say they still have not received official redundancy notices.

Workers at McGillycuddy Aluminium and PVC say they are in an employment limbo at present since they were told on January 18 last that they were being made redundant with immediate effect.

McGillycuddy Aluminium and PVC, based in Monavalley Industrial Park in Tralee, has been one of Kerry's biggest suppliers of aluminium and PVC windws and doors.

"We were simply told that we were being let go immediately and no official notice of redundancy was given. We're looking for our RP50 forms now as well as our redundancy packages," a spokesperson for the workers told The Kerryman.

Workers engaged in talks before Christmas on proposals to secure the company's survival but these failed to reach a conclusion.

"We agreed to take pay cuts among other proposals, but all of a sudden we were brought back on January 18, exactly one month after we last worked, and were told we were being made redundant with immediate effect," the spokesperson said.

"At that stage we asked for the paperwork and have met with management a number of times since but nothing has been forthcoming and we feel it's not good enough," he said.

"We're not naive enough to think the economic circumstances don't affect us, particularly in a business so reliant on construction, but we feel we should be taken more into consideration at this point," he said. "We want to be issued with the necessary documentation so that all sides can move on. It's been an unfortunate end to 20 years in business."

The Kerryman was unable to contact McGillycuddy Aluminum and PVC owner John McGillycuddy.
