Moore to unveil sculpture of Christie
A LIFE size sculpture of Tralee singer songwriter Christie Hennessy will be unveiled in his hometown on Saturday by his friend Christy Moore.
The bronze sculpture, executed by Nicholas Dimbleby, was commissioned by Tralee Town Council following an international competition in 2008 to find an appropriate memorial to honour the famous singer.
"It is a fitting tribute to a gifted son of Tralee who loved his town and brought it international acclaim," said Mayor of Tralee Cllr Terry O'Brien.
The new sculpture will be sited in The Square, where Christie worked as a messenger boy in his youth, collecting and delivering parcels on his bicycle.
Universal Music is launching a second posthumous album entitled ' A Friend of Mine' on October 30 to coincide with the unveiling ceremony in Tralee.
Christie's family have collaborated to create this latest album of his work, including Christie's wife Gill, daughters Amber and Hermione and son Tim. It features selected tracks recorded by Christie in the months prior to his death in December 2007.
Deputy Mayor of Tralee Mairead Fernane has also suggested an annual Christie Hennessy music festival be staged in Tralee to perpetuate the memory of one of the town's most famous sons.
The unveiling ceremony will take place in The Square at 11am on Saturday.
