Lucky not to get jail term
A WEST Limerick man has been told he is lucky not to be going to jail having appeared in court charged with a second offence of driving with no insurance, and also driving while disqualified.
Michael J Kennedy of Lisaniska, Castlemahon, Co Limerick, claimed at Castleisland District Court that he had taken a chance driving when he heard his girlfriend had been rushed to hospital in Tralee with suspected meningitis.
His solicitor said the incident was an emergency and that when he was stopped by gardaí in Castleisland on February 2, 2009, his client admitted that he had no insurance and that he was disqualified at the time. The court heard that disqualification was imposed in 2008 for a three year period.
Judge James O'Connor convicted Mr Kennedy of driving with no insurance and disqualified him from driving for 12 months, while also imposing a fine of 1,250.
He was also convicted of driving without a licence and fined 150.
He told Mr Kennedy that he was lucky not to he heading to jail.
