'Experience' the key for Killorglin school plans

A KILLORGLIN school has come up with an innovative way of easing the transition from primary to secondary school for incoming students.

Killorglin Community College has organised an 'Experience Day', from 9.30am to 3.30pm, on Saturday, February 4, for students that are already enrolled, or are considering attending the school next September.

The aim of experience day is to dispel any worries a student may have about entering second level education and generate an enthusiasm to return next September and study their chosen subjects in more detail.

The day will involve four interactive activities that will introduce students to subjects taught and the innovative teaching methodologies applied at the school.

Principal Con Moynihan said the school was delighted with the "very significant level of enquiry into the Killorglin Community College Experience initiative".

"In all, we expect the students to have a wonderful experience and, in the process, have the chance to meet the pupils and teachers who will make up the school community next autumn," the principal said.

On experience day the students, working in small groups, will engage in the following cross-curricular activities:

n Metalwork and computers to design and produce a cartoon character keyring

n Drama, history, geography and science to experience life in an ancient civilisation

n Modern languages and cooking skills to prepare Spanish, French and Irish cuisine and experience these cultures through music and dance

n Technology, woodwork and maths to design and produce a key holder

"Killorglin Community College has been growing steadily over the past few years. It received its Whole School Evaluation from the Department of Education and Skills last March. The report which followed was extremely positive and commended the holistic education received by students of the college.

"It went on to highlight the great strides taken by the highly qualified staff towards developing academic excellence in the school," Con Moynihan said.

Sixth class students considering Killorglin Community College as an option for their second level education can secure a place on Experience Day by contacting the school at (066) 9761168 during business hours.
