Endesa dismisses rumours of Tarbert power station sale
ENDESA has dismissed local speculation that the Spanish company has sold Tarbert Island power station.
Speculation on the sale of the power station has mounted in recent weeks following reports in the Spanish media that the energy company — which bought the plant from the ESB over two years ago — is considering selling all its Irish assets, including Tarbert.
The reports suggested the company was to take the step as it no longer viewed the Irish energy market as being of strategic importance.
Rumours were rife in Tarbert this week that the power station has already been sold. However, a spokesperson for Endesa Ireland told The Kerryman that no sale has taken place, nor have they heard of any plans by the parent company to sell its Irish facilities. He added that the Irish office would not necessarily hear of such a move, even if it were being considered, as their sole purpose is to manage the company's assets in Ireland.
The Tarbert Island power station is owned by the Spanish power company Endesa, which in turn is 92 per cent owned by Europe's biggest energy company, Enel, which was formerly the Italian state utility.
