Duo charged over major Tralee drug seizure

Wednesday February 03 2010

TWO Lithuanian men have re-appeared in court in connection with a major seizure of cannabis in the Tralee last month.

At Tralee District Court on Wednesday Viktoras Zuikaitas (25) and Erikas Vaicekauskis (25) both of 10 St Brendan's Park, Tralee, appeared charged with possession of cannabis for sale and supply at their home on January 13.

Both men were arrested at the house in St Brendans Park in early January following a surveillance operation by the Kerry Divisional Drug Squad.

A search of the property uncovered cannabis with an estimated street value of €75,000.

Both men have been granted free legal aid and were remanded in custody to appear again at Tralee District Court on Wednesday, February 10.

Solicitor Pat Mann who is representing both men applied for bail for both defendants.

Gardaí objected to bail on the grounds that both men present a flight risk, the likelihood of further serious charges, the strength of the evidence.

Inspector Martin McCarthy said both men had serious Heroin addictions and injected the drug. He said their addictions were likely to lead them to commit further offences.

Inspector McCarthy said he believed both men presented a flight risk as they had no ties to Ireland and had no assets or family here.
