Discovery of dead seals raises fear of cull
THE discovery of three dead seals in Tralee Gay has raised fears that a cull of the growing seal population may have taken place off the Kerry coast. Fears were raised on the discovery of the three carcasses in the Maharees in recent days. Three adult seal carcasses were found on the shore, two near Sandy Bay in Brandon Bay and one at Rough Point in Kilshannig at the tip of the Maharees tombolo.
The discovery comes amid mounting concern from fishermen in Kerry who believe the local seal population is increasing rapidly leading to a downturn in fish stocks. Some have gone as far as to call for a cull on the population in a bid to stabilise fish levels off the Kerry coast.
