KILLARNEY gardaí say they are keeping an open mind concerning the final movements of the Silver Hyundai Accent containing the five teenagers involved in last Wednesday's early morning horror smash.
The 10-year-old vehicle was found wrapped around a tree at 7.10am and no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Gardaí have confirmed several sightings of a silver car in the early hours of Wednesday morning but have asked the public for further assistance in its movements, particularly between 3am and 7.10am.
It is understood that the vehicle was driven from Killarney and was seen in the vicinity of a house party in the Kilcummin area that the five teenagers attended. A number of people who attended the party have been interviewed and further interviews are expected to be carried out in the coming days.
The vehicle was later spotted in Barraduff after the party had finished and had been making its way to Killarney when the tragic incident happened at Carrigeen.
Gardaí have also confirmed that they received a phone call concerning a speeding silver car in the Kilcummin area at approximately 2.30am but the vehicle had left the scene when they arrived and they could not confirm if it was the vehicle in question.
Killarney gardaí also say they are satisfied as to ownership of the Hyundai but would not be drawn on whether or not it had been borrowed. It is understood that the vehicle had been a replacement car provided by a local garage. Gardaí have questioned the garage owner and are believed to have no issues in this respect.
Investigating gardaí will wait on medical advice before they can interview surviving teenager, Darragh Jones.
Meanwhile, results of post-mortem and toxicology tests will not be returned for at least another two weeks.
Superintendent Michael Maher called for assistance from the public in piecing together the movements of the vehicle in the hours leading up to the incident.
"We have received substantial calls concerning the vehicle's movements but, as always, we will keep an open mind before making any conclusions," he stated.
