A DRY and sunny day on Sunday made for perfect ploughing conditions as Ballyheigue Ploughing Association hosted its annual competitive match on the lands of Michael Halloran in Ballymacquinn. The turnout on the day was outstanding, accordiong to oragnisers, with most of the attention focussing on the fierce competition taking place in the U28 class.

The event ended with four competitors still in contention for a place in the All-Ireland in September, with final places to be decided at next week's ploughing in Ardfert.

The U21 class was also highly competitive, with both competitors trying to outdo one another for the coveted All –Ireland spot.

According to secreyary of the Ballyheigue Ploughing Association, JP Corridon, Sunday's event was a huge success and a credit to all involved.

"The weather has been good, the attendance has been great, and with a full house of competitors with 23 in total and strong competition this year, who could ask for more in a ploughing match," he said. "The work done by the reversible class displays the high standard of ploughing being done this year."

Mr Corridan thanked all competitors who entered the competition, Michael Halloran for the use of his land along with judges PJ Coutrney and Jerry Coakley, and steward John McCarthy, all from Cork.

Next up on the local ploughing calendar fixture list is Ardfert this Sunday, February 8, on the lands of James Kennelly, Banna West. Those wishing to compete are asked to call Brendan Blackwell (066 7134130) by Thursday night.
