€35 bet nets win of €280k
Wednesday March 10 2010
RECESSION blues were banished forever for one Moyvane man who beat all the odds in winning over €280,000 through two accumulator bets on an afternoon's racing on Friday.
The lucky punter won €280,082.15 in total from two accumulator bets via the Paddy Power website on the same six horses, all running at Lingfield on Friday afternoon.
According to the bookmaker, the man did not realise his good fortune until contacted by them on Monday morning and had not even watched the races. Speculation has been mounting in Moyvane since Monday as to his identity — all focusing on one well-known individual.
Judging by the bet, it would appear the lucky punter knew exactly what he was doing, splitting a starting pot of €35.20 across two accumulators. One bet included a 20 cent each way 'lucky 63' consisting of 63 bets covering all combinations of the winning horses, which paid out €36,141.
But the lion's share of the prize came through the placing of €5 on an accumulator beginning in the first race with Waterloo Dock (starting price at 8/1), rolled onto Last king of scotland (fav), Azlak (evens/fav), Raimond Ridge (7/1), onto Sapphire Prince (4/1) and finally Honest Broker (12/1) which scraped home in the last Lingfield race by just a head.
