Stream keeps its place on the road

THE stream that flows across a cobblestone ford on the Slea Head road is in no danger of being diverted, buried or otherwise hidden away, Kerry County Council promised this week amid concerns that work currently underway on the road might see the West Kerry landmark disappear from sight forever.
The council diverted the stream under the roadway some weeks ago but this was part of a necessary repair project, according to a council spokesperson.
"The cobbles under the stream had become eroded and some of them had been loosened. This resulted in the appearance of a number of potholes, which meant that the undersides of buses and other vehicles were scraping off the road as they went over the stream," he said.
"Roads staff from the Area Office have been carrying out works to improve the situation. This included embedding the cobblestones on a concrete base to stabilise them. While this work was being carried out the stream was diverted under the road. Then a covering of sand was put over the cobblestones while everything set. This has since been removed and the stream is now travelling back over the road and will continue to do so," the spokesperson said.
