WOMEN of West Kerry celebrated International Women's Day in Benners Hotel, Dingle, on Sunday and gave a helping hand to charity at the same time.
The organisers, Lisa Brown and Janelle Newman, used the occasion to help the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre in Tralee and a women's organisation in earthquake stricken Haiti.
"Our motivation for organising this was to have a celebration for International Women's Day and to help these two charitable organisations. There was no admission charge but we sold raffle tickets for prizes which were donated by local businesses and organisations," Lisa Brown told The Kerryman.
"Our afternoon programme included a number of speakers of different nationalities talking about their own experiences as women in society, in both the workplace and the home. The day was not just about women but an equal opportunity for people in society. We also had various musicians and singers to entertain us, including Eilís Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon as well as Aoife Granville," she added.
The list of speakers included film-maker and writer Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin and Catherine Casey of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.
One of the entertainers was Mariko Mizuno from Japan who sang and played guitar for the gathering.
