STAFF at the Credit Union were thrilled this week to learn that two budding young artists they put forward for the organisation's national poster competition were recognised as among the best in the land. Billy Kissane from Dromclough National School was voted the overall winner in Ireland for his age category (8-10 years) when his stunning poster of a farmer at work in the fields on his tractor wowed the national judges.

I ASSUMED here last week that this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Castleisland would commence at Anne Mac's Topaz Filling Station; I was wrong. A brief note from organising committee member, Ted Kenny informs us that the starting point has moved further out to the Tralee Road Industrial Estate.

GAA Lotto: 3,6,11. Jackpot not won. E30 each to Sean O'Grady, Firies, Graham Breen, c/o. Bridie, Tadhg Breen, c/o. Bridie, Kitty Twomey, Tralee Rd, Castleisland, Maura Gleeson, c/o Frank. The jackpot will be E2,300 in Sherwood's, Farranfore tonight.

Results: Our Minor Team lost by 3pts in Scartaglin on Sat evening. They led at
half time by two points, but they were unlucky near the end as things went
against them. The team played well overall, with Denis Hayes outstanding in
the backs, while Edward Kerrisk got most of the scores. The under 16 game
was postponed on Saturday at the request of Fossa. Seniors: E.K. League -
Firies 12pts, Rathmore 1gl.8pts. Firies had a one point win over Rathmore
who were without their two inter-county players on Sunday in Rathmore.
Firies had a very good first half and should possibly be ahead by 3 or 4 pts
at half time. Instead Rathmore led by a point from a free, just before the
whistle. Rathmore started well in the second half but the Firies defence
held out. However Firies settled down and with some good long range scores
by Colm O'Shea from frees, and good combinations, they went on the record an
historic win over a useful Rathmore side. Team: Sean O'Sullivan, Jn.
O'Mahony, James Casey, Donagh O'Donoghue, Pat Browne, Dan O'Shea, Jn. Hayes,
Ian Crowley, Alan Looney, Neil B. Foley, Colm O'Shea, Stephen Flynn, Stephen
Foley, Jack Sherwood, Ml. Daly. Subs: Donal Daly, Eamon O'Mahony, Brendan
Spring, Paul Dineen (all played), Eamon Foley. Captain for 2010: James Casey &
Donal Daly is vice captain. Firies will play Fossa on Sunday at 2pm in
Farranfore in the 4th round. SCOR NA BPAISTI: The East Kerry final took
place in Fossa Community Hall at the weekend and the local committee must be
complimented for the organisation and service. Well done to all our
competitors who took part in music, ballad group, set dancing, quiz and solo
singing. Firies won the ballad group with Sarah and Laura Murphy, Marie
Groves & Miriam & Fiona Fell taking part. Thanks to Fiona
Fitzgerald, Sheila Fell, Maureen Murphy, Eileen Groves and all the parents
and supporters. The GAA also wishes to thank both national schools for their
cooperation. The GAA club will provide a bus, Jn O'Meara for the Co.
semifinal in Dromid on Sat 13th at 6pm. All our participants did very well,
in particular the music group which included Megan O'Connor of Faha NS. They
have a bright future in Scor. Thanks to Brendan for all his work and to Mike
Leary for his help. BALLYHAR DYNAMOS: LOTTO: The numbers drawn on Thursday
25th February were 3,7,8,24. There was no winner. The E25 winners were John
Quinn Firies, Jimmy Culloty, Firies, Gene Evans c/o. Astellas. Johnny
Henderson, Firies & Laura Quinn Firies. Next draw will take place on
Thursday 11th March in Shanahan's Bar for a jackpot of E3800. Ballyhar U13
beat Inter Kenmare 3-1 with goals by Kieran Brosnan and Brian Kennedy (2)
Ballyhar U15 beat Dingle 3-2 with goals by Donal Foley, Shane O'Sullivan and
Fergal Hallisey FARRANFORE GOLF SOCIETY: Results from Waterville on Sat 6th.
Capt. Tom Brosnan had a successful first outing with 47 golfers playing with
beautiful sunshine. 3 golfers returned 36pts each, but it was Jn. Sommers
edged to the front to receive his 1st overall win. The society wish to thank
Mike McCarthy of Larkhill, Milltown for hosting prize presentation and
Killarney Printing for 2010 fixture cards. Results: 1st J. Sommers 16,36.
2nd. A. Curran 17. 3rd M. Keane 14, 36. 4th J. Ryan 18,33. 5th M. Daly
21,33. 6th D. O'Shea 33. Cat 1 P. O'Sullivan. Cat 2 S. O'Connor.

AFTER congratulating Nora Nelligan on her Late Late Show car win on the Eurovision special show, I asked her was it luck or perseverance – or both? She answered: "Definitely perseverance."

It was the night when Niamh Kavanagh, again, won the right to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest with her entry It's for

You.

Nora entered the competition, which asked the question: 'How many times has Ireland won the Eurovision Song Contest?' and was at home when the phone rang. Ryan Tubridy popped the question and Nora was equal to it and ended up with a new Toyota Auris and €5,000 cash better off.

Nora, of Clounough, has won more competitions than most people could only dream of. On being asked if she entered every competition she came across she replied, "I only enter the ones that appeal to me." The Late Late Show car competition appealed to her, she entered and won.

Nora won another car at the turn of the Millennium in a newspaper competition and has also won holidays to London, Paris and Florida. The 'Examiner Car' she won from a countrywide entry of some 26,000 people. That throws a little shade on the 'perseverance' theory and brings lady luck more into the light.

Well done to Nora and Dan and family and may they never lose the touch.

ST PATRICKS DAY: The community is gearing up for St Patrick's Day which is a feast day that is close to the hearts of Irish people in all corners of the globe. Now there are plenty of all types of emblems to signify our nationality leading to the over commercialism of the occasion. In the old days the shamrock was very plentiful and everyone had a sprig on their lapels on March 17th. Sadly in recent years the good old shamrock has done a disappearing act and is being replaced by the artificial emblems. Many myths are told about St Patrick but he is a saint that Ireland owes a lot to and the celebration of his feast Day brings out a great sense of national pride in Irish people in every corner of the world. Interestingly St Patrick had little religious beliefs up to the age of 16 and considered himself a pagan. Then everything changed when he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village and during his captivity, he became closer to God. He escaped from slavery after six years and went to Gaul in France where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for a period of 12 years. During his training he became aware that his calling and left determined to convert Irish people to Christianity. His sought permission to return to Ireland, to convert the natives to Christianity but his wish was not granted with hi superiors instead appointed St. Palladius. However two years later, Palladius transferred to Scotland. and Patrick, having adopted that Christian name earlier, was then appointed as second bishop to Ireland. He was quite successful at winning converts.and this fact upset the Celtic Druids and consequently he was arrested several times, but escaped on each occasion. He travelled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish people to Christianity. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to County Down and died on March 17th 461 A D. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since. Much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick's Day with little of it is substantiated. Some of this lore includes the belief that Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland. Of course, no snakes were ever native to Ireland, and some people think this is a metaphor for the conversion of the pagans. Though originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday. One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. And this stems from a more bona fide Irish tale that tells how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. The St. Patrick's Day custom was first established in America in 1737 and now some of the biggest St Patrick's Day Parades are held in the major cities in the United States. Most of what is known about St Patrick comes from his two works, the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians. Saint Patrick described himself as a "most humble-minded man, pouring forth a continuous paean of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God. CHARITY WALK Get those walking boots shining for the Kerry Together 5K Charity Fun Walk on Sunday March 21st and support Kerry Life Education's Harold Project. For information and sponsorship cards phone 064 6635135. PUBLIC INFORMATION EVENING: At a time when many people are losing their jobs and industrial development in North Kerry has come to a standstill those effected will avail of any opportunity to try and get back to employment again. With this in mind a public Information Evening will be held at The Eddie Carmody Hall in Ballylongford on this Wednesday night March 10th at 8pm. Speakers from North and East Kerry Development C0 (Leader) will be in attendance. So if anyone is contemplating starting up a new business or expanding an existing one they can find out what grants and help that is available. Any enterprising person that is contemplating improving a housing estate or community will be provided with all the support and advice available along with grants that can help them with their project. This is a meeting that is well worth dropping in on and hopefully both sides of the parish will be well represented. GOLF A.G.M.: There was a big turnout for the annual General Meeting of the Sandpipers Golf Society which was held at The Old Attic Bar in Ballybunion on last Wednesday night. The secretary of the society Tim Joe Griffin thanked everyone for their assistance and co operation during the year and all the local business people that sponsored the outings. He also paid tribute to the captain Andy Somerville for the excellent way he organised the outings and securing very good courses all around the county. He urged all those that play in the competitions to make a special effort to attend the prize giving ceremonies and show support for the sponsors. Outgoing captain Andy Somerville echoed many of the sentiments of the secretary and he thanked Paddy Holly for doing a great job as president of the Society. Due to prudent management of the finances of the society the treasurer Tommy Toomey revealed that the financial books were in the black which was gratifying in these recessionary times. He said that the sub for the new season will remain at 30 euros which is very good value for money as the society will have 10 or possibly 11 outings this year. When it came to the election of officers outing Captain Andy Somerville stepped down after two years at the helm and Paddy Holly's seat was also vacated. The officers elected were President Mike Rice, Captain Tommy O Connor, Secretary Tim Joe Griffin, Treasurer Tommy Toomey, PRO Mike rice. Handicap secretary Donie O Keeffe and John Joy. A lively debate took place afterwards at which suggestions and ideas were taken into consideration. It was decided that the Society will engage is a competition this year against a team from East Clare. It will be a 2 legged affair with The Sandpipers to travel to play the Clare side at the Boydyke Golf course while the return leg will be played at Ballyheigue. A Cup is being sponsored and the first leg will be in Clare on May 20th. The Golfer of the Year has not yet been decided with 3 players neck and next at the top of the table. Only the minimum separates Andy Somerville, Tom Joe O Mahony, Tim Joe Griffin so the competition is reaching a nailing conclusion with just two more outings to decide the issue. A great line up of outings has been arranged for the new season with trips to Adare, Beaufort, Killorglin, Ballyheigue, Ardfert, Ballybunion, Boydyke (East Clare) Membership of the society is now open and everyone would like to see more ladies joining the society. The next outing is at Castlegregory on Saturday March 27th. SOCCER: Asdee Rovers dropped 3 more league points in Tralee on Sunday going down 3 – 1 to Kilflynn Santos. Asdee seemed to be heading for victory in this game leading 1 – 0 courtesy of a Patrick O Brien goal with just 10 minutes left in the game. However some sloppy defending cost them dearly in the closing stages of the game with Kilflynn finding the net 3 times to secure victory. The team on duty was James Kelly, Joseph O Brien. Kieran Mc Elligott, Charles Dalton, John Martin Horgan, Noel Long, Killian Beasley, Maurice O Halloran, Tom Pierse, Patrick O Brien and John Muhappi. Subs Kieran Fitzelle and Niall Miller .Patrick O Brien. Asdee host Castleisland next Sunday in the Greyhound Bar Cup replay with the kick off at 2 30pm. SWEEPSTAKE DRAW : The Asdee Rovers Sweepstake Draw will be held at J J's on next Sunday night and tickets are widely on sale priced 2 Euros. PREMIER GOALS COMMPETITION: The Asdee Rovers Premiership Competition is reaching a very exciting climax with 3 members neck and neck for the cash prize. The state of the parties prior to next weekend's final round is, 1st Charlie Dalton, Everton 11 goals, 2nd Mike Moloney, Arsenal 9 goals and 3rd Mike Doyle, Manchester City, 7 goals. A new draw will take place after the wweekend games are played. G. A.A.: The local Derby between fellow parishioners Asdee and Ballylongford at Jack Walsh Park on Sunday never lived up to its usual billing with Ballylongford winning the game without ever breaking sweat by a 15 point margin. Some of the exchanges between the sides was never neighbourly and the game was well over long before the final whistle sounded. Except for the opening 20minutes Asdee were outplayed in most departments of play with Ballylongford dominating proceedings. After an encouraging start and the sides level at 2 points each after 20 minutes of the game it looked as if it was going to e a very closely contested game. However when Asdee let down their guard and Patrick Deegan found the net for Ballylongford the writing was on the wall for this side of the parish. Still with Ballylongford leading 1 – 4 to 0 – 2 at half time Asdee seemed to be still in the contest with a chance. However that was as good as it got for Asdee and when two of their players were sent off they were only chasing shadows.and Ballylongford cruised to an emphatic victory. The tame manner in which Asdee succumbed to the opposition disappointed Asdee supporters and many of them were heading home long before the final whistle sounded. The final score Ballylongford 4 - 9. Asdee 0 - 6 Team Asdee; James Kelly, Mike Long, Brian Coughlan, David Ruddle, Kieran McElligott, Brian O Hanlon, Eamon McElligott, John Doran, Noel Long, 0 - 1 Jeremiah Tydings, Conor Coughlan, 0 - 1, Micheal Walsh, Darren Russell, Padraig Ruddle, Eoin Kennedy, 0 - 3. Subs, Cyril Dineen, 0 - 1 for Micheal Walsh, Sean McElligoptt for David Ruddle, Kenneth Tydings, Padraig Buckley. COUNTY MINOR LEAGUE. : The Asdee/Ballylongford minor team bounced back from their previous week's defeat by St. Michael's /Foilmore to record a 5 point victory over neighbours Beale at O Rahilly Park in Ballylongford on Saturday afternoon. In a very competitive and low scoring first half the home team led at half time by 0 – 3 to 0 – 1 and Beale can thank their goalie Joe Downey for keeping them in the game as he make a series of excellent saves. The standard of play improved significantly in the second half and a brace of goal from David Culhane allowed Asdee/Ballylongford take charge f the game. While Beale finished strongly it proved to be a bridge too far to rescue the situation and the home side ran out comfortable winners securing 2 County League points to get their league prospects back on course. The combination side's best performers were David Culhane with a tally of 2 – 2 Kenneth Foley, Darren Russell and Cathal Carmody. The final score was Asdee/Bally 2 - 8 Beale 0 - 9. Asdee/Ballylongford, Shane O Sullivan, Eamon McElligott, Cathal Carmody, Tom Kennedy, Kenneth Foley, Thomas Tydings, David Culhane, 2 - 2, Darren Russell, 0 - 1, Tom McKeown, Matt O Connor, 0 - 1 Con Carmody, Jeremiah Tydings,0 - 4 Micheal Tydings. Subs, Padraig Buckley, Kieran Kelly, Conor McEllistrim, Brandon O Driscoll, Luke O Driscoll. N.K.U21 Champ. 1/4 Final replay Ballydonoghue play St. Senans in Duagh on Saturday March 13th at 4:00pm. Co. Minor League Rd 2 We are at home to Glenflesk Wednesday March 17th at 3:00pm. RESULTS: N.K.League Div2 Ballydonoghue (1-11) Knocknagoshel (2-6). Hard to believe we almost left this game slip from our grasp after being ahead by (1-7) to no score after 25mins. But the concession of a late goal in the first half and a woefully lethargic performance in the second half almost handed the game to Knocknagoshel. It was all Ballydonoghue in the first half and we were 4pts to the good after 10mins before Phillip Moran stretched our lead with a well taken goal. Eamon Walsh (1pt) and Thomas Kennelly (2pt) increased our lead as we headed for the half time whistle. Knock then had their first score a point on 25mins and two minutes later had the ball in the back of the net to give them hope for the second half. Paul Kennelly extended our lead with a point as the referee blew for half time. Ballydonoghue (18) Knock (1-1). We were first to score in the second half with Philip Moran adding another point. 2mins into the half. But that was it, as we went from a team that looked to be coasting to an easy victory to a team that were at sixes and sevens that allowed Knock come within 1pt of them (1-9) to (2-5) with eight minutes remaining. But thanks to late points from Paul Kennelly and Padraig Bunyan (that were separated by a Knocknagoshel point) we managed to hang on. COISTE Na nOg: registration will take place on Monday 15th march at the club rooms in Coolard from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. PIONEERS: There has been a huge response to the organising of a reunion concert and function. The first pioneer show was in February 1986. That North Kerry final against Ballyduff and the Technical College was held in the Presentation Convent, Listowel. A group of 56 people took part. In 1987 Marie Kissane and Marie Scanlan produced the Four Seasons. We beat Causeway but lost to Ballyduff in the final with a cast of 62 teenagers. Finally in 1988 we were successful when we beat Ballyduff in the Plaza Hall, Listowel. For some reason our 1-hour show ran to 1 hour 22 minutes. An Agreement before the county final meant that the time penalty was dropped. In rehearsal we never allowed for the long applause! There were great scenes of jubilation. The late Fr. Michael Stack PP was very involved behind the scenes and was a great help as he had started the Killorglin Panto group years previously. Marie Scanlon, Produces and Musical Director helped by Marie Kissane put in long hours, weeks and months. We went on to win Munster semi final beating Cappa, West Limerick and lost to Rosscarberie, Cork. Tom Keane was stage manager with Mike Joe Scanlan. The show was put on in Asdee. Martin Lynch and Timmy Keane, Anne Tydings were some of the comedy artists. A meeting will be held shortly to plan events to mark the 25 years of the first show. Contact info@ceolchiarrai.com. SCOR: Tintean Theatre is now becoming a major venue for the GAA's talent events. This year it has been chosen as the host centre for the Munster senior Scor finals. 600 people are expected for this event with competitors from all over Munster on the weekend of 20th/21st March. Further information 068 28003. SET DANCERS from Ballydonoghue had another successful might at Tomasinis on Saturday night last when the local branch of Comhaltas held their Annual Set Competition. WHAT A DAY we had. We started in the Village of Asdee at 1.15 and didn't get back until 6.20. We were out for 5 hours with thirty-two jumps. This was some hunt, three areas, Asdee, Lisselton and Ballylongford down by Carrig Island and back the shore and home to Jack Js again. The jumps tested quite a few of us where the fallers landed in style. Well done to the two boys that did their first hunt and had no falls. Hats off to Paudie McMahon and John Jones, also Shauna Madden Ryan that joined us from Limerick for the day. A big thanks to her family for making the trip. Happy birthday to Connie and Laura who had birthdays during the week. A big thanks to Johanna and Tom and Jasper, Paudie, John, Mike, Paul for all the work that went on. Also Jack Js for the food. Next week we're in Duagh, it's the last hunt so hopefully you'll all make. St. Patricks Day we are in Castleisland as we were asked to lead out the parade and then on to Brosna for our charity ride. A big thanks to all the landowners for the use of their land. Duagh will be another long hunt so we will be leaving on time.

Basketball; Bay played Ballybunion on Wednesday March 3rd in Dingle and came away with a win 52 points to 42 points, Brandon Bay were leading well throughout the game as Ballybunion didn't really settle into the game until the last quarter. Top scorers for the local side were Marie Finn 18pts, Irene Mc Kenna 10pts, Cathy Barry and Alish Flynn 7pts while Karen Scanlon and Ursela O Toole both scored 4 points each, Suzanne Hall put two HSE Farm and Rural Stress Helpline 1800 742 645 2009 presented many challenges to those living in rural areas and this has seen an increase in the number of calls to the helpline. Previously, many callers cited loneliness, and isolation and depression as key factors. These calls are still coming in but some callers are now concerned about financial issues in relation to farming. Stress and anxiety are huge factors. We urge people who are feeling stressed or lonely to call the helpline and talk to someone in complete confidence. points on the score board for Brandon bay. The local ladies had a great year only loosing two games all year, they are now top of division four and have made coach John Demery very proud. Well done to all involved, as the now enter Division 3 at the start of this years league. GAA - Castlegregory minors lost to Skellig Rangers in the second round of the Keanes Division 5A County Minor Football League on a score line of Skellig Ranger 4-14 Castlegregory 3-09. There is no minor match this weekend but the next round of the Keanes Divisions 5A county league is against Croman / Keel on the 20th of March. Castlegregory Seniors played Dingle in the 4th round of the West Kerry League at Pairc an Aghasaigh Saturday last (06.03.10) to 2.15pm. Castle had a slightly stronger team than the 20 that narrowly lost to Annascaul 2 weeks ago. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half Castle did well to keep up with a Dingle side who were playing at home and a boost of confidence that comes from winning the Paudie O Shea tournament the previous week. Castle played a nice style of football and moved the ball quickly into the full forward line but unfortunately some chances were wasted in front of goal. Half time score line Dingle 106 Castle 0-05. Castle made changes at half time and brought Anton Kelleher on for Liam Mansell, Anton came on in the corner and John Fitzgerald switched to full forward. Castle stepped up a gear in the second half and with the aid of the breeze ate into the Dingle lead. Shane Hennessy was a major contributor for Castle converting three frees and scoring three point from play. Alan Fitzgerald was running at the Dingle defence from midfield, Colm O Connor was being a nuisance as usual and sniffing out the root of any of the Dingle attacks. At the back Joe O Connor Gearoid Fitzgerald and Tomas O Connor were keeping the Dingle forwards honest. Colm Sills and Stephen Brown were always available to carry the ball out of danger and setup attacks. The Castle goal came with 10 min left in the second half with Castle down by a point. Dingle goal keeper Diarmuid Murphy tried a short kick out but Alan McNamara intercepted the ball and passed to Johnny Fitzgerald who was standing at the edge of the large square and buried the ball passed the Dingle goal keeper. Shane Kenny's smile was not long lived when he was called into action himself to save from point blank range from the Dingle corner forward to keep Castle from losing their hard fought but well deserved lead. Refereeing decisions were frustrating at times for Castle but it did not stop Castle coming out winners. Final Score Castle 1-12 Dingle 109. Team. Shane Kenny, Tomas O Connor, Joe O Connor, Gearoid Fitzgerald, Joe Scully, Stephen Browne, Colm Scills, Shane Hennessy, Alan Fitzgerald, Colm O Connor, J.B. Spillane, Jamie O Donnell, Alan McNamara, Liam Maunsell, John Fitzgerald. Subs Anton Kelleher, Kevin Kennedy, Greg Moriarty, Pat Lynch, Thomas Walsh. GAA SOCIAL: The main GAA event of the weekend was the GAA social held in the Ballygary House Hotel and Spa. A great mix of people from around the parish (young and old) attended. Guests of honour were Chairman of the West Kerry board Derry O Murphy, Chairman of the County board Jerome Conway and former GAA President and Fine Gael M.E.P. Sean Kelly. On display were the shields for the West Kerry B League and the County B league. The Cups for Division 3 County league, County Junior Championship, Munster Junior Championship and All Ireland Junior Championship. A lot of trophies and bucket loads of medals, loads of people acknowledged and thanked too long to go into again. The club would like to thank are the 3 ladies who organized the night Gert Spillane, Anne O Connor and Kathleen Hennessy. I have a funny feeling that Tom Spillane had some hand in the organizing and providing funds as well. Our M.C. for the evening was Tommy Reidy who did a great job as he was asked to step in at short notice for Marty Morrisey (Marty couldn't handle such a big event!) Coiste Na nÓg - U12s Training Sunday at 12-15 in field. U14s – Our U14s got their season off to a good start with a win over Lispole in Páirc An gCaisleán on Friday last. It was a great team effort by Castle, with early goals coming from Shane Spillane , Aaron Crean, and two from Michael Mullally, and points coming from Brandon Hoare, Jack Nix and Timmothy Moriarty. Castle led at half time with a scoreline of 4-04 to 2-02. Lispole fought back in the second half putting the Castle defence under severe pressure and scoring five unanswered points, and if it wasn't for some great saves by David O Dowd and strong defending most notably by Dennis O Riordan and John Joe Hussey the game could have slipped away from Castle, however our lads did not give up and a Michael Mullaly goal put the momentum back with Castle, more points came from Mullally , Shane Spillane, and Brandon Hoare and it ended with a score of 5-09 to 2 – 07. Next u14 game has not yet been fixed but players will be informed at training on Thursday at 7-30. U16s Training Monday at 6pm Castlegregory Coiste Na nÓg would like to wish Daragh Ó Shea the very best on his retirement from inter county football. Dara gave us many great days in the green and gold, and he always took time out of his busy schedule to attend Coiste Na nÓg functions, he was always very popular by both young and old when he came to Castle.

Fáilte roimh gach éinne. Last Man Standing - Listowel Celtic are holding an end of season "Last Man Standing" competition. Entries cost 10 with a prize fund of 500. Based on the Premiership it kicks off this weekend, so contact any club member for details! COMMUNITY GAMES - What can one say only another outstanding weekend for Listowel Community Games competitors!! All the cold nights in St. Michael's College paid off when Listowel achieved 6 GOLD, 6 SILVER MEDALS AND 1 CERTIFICATE over the weekend. On Sunday last Abbeydorney Community Centre was once again the location for County Finals of Community Games RecitationU.14, Drama/Comedy U.14 and Culture CornerU.15. Listowel was represented in all 3 activities. First on stage was RECITATION and Listowel was represented by a very talented young girl, Eve Dowling, pupil of Killocrim N.S. Eve's performance of "Welcome Talk from Flight Attendant" was outstanding for which she achieved a very creditable 2nd place fighting off very stiff opposition from 9 other areas in the County. Eve is only 11 years so she is eligible to take part in this competition for 3 more years so I think it is very appropriate to say "WATCH THIS SPACE". Castleisland won this competition and we would like to wish them best of luck in National finals. The script was given by the very talented Paddy McElligott who also helped with coaching along with Eileen McCarthy. DRAMA/COMEDY: 5 Areas took part in this competition and the standard was extremely high. Listowel was represented by a very talented group of 5 - Bill O'Flynn, Maimie O'Flynn, Abby McMahon, Olivia Stack and Eve Dowling. Their performance of "The Funeral Planner" was outstanding and the audience really enjoyed their sense of humour. They also achieved a very creditable 2nd place. Unfortunately Bill will be over age for this competiton next year but with his talent we will find a spot for him in another competition. We hope to see the others back with us again next year. Lixnaw took the top spot in this competition and Best of Luck to them in National Finals. The script for this was also written by Paddy McElligott and he also helped Eileen with the coaching. CULTURE CORNER: The final act of the day was the Culture Corner competition. Onle 3 areas took part in this competition but the standard was extremely high - it seems to get more challenging every year. Listowel has achieved outstanding success in this competition for 5 years winning 2 All-Ireland's. This year proved no exception when 6 young actors and actresses took to the stage for the first time and performed with outstanding excellence "The Spinning Wheel" and kept tradition in every sense winning the GOLD MEDALS. The cast were Cathal Keane, Sam Tarrant, Niamh Mahony, Aishling Keane, Aislinn Chute and Aoife Moloney. They put on an outstanding performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, themselves and obviously the judges. There is great credit due to these young boys and girls - they worked extremely hard over the last couple of weeks - learning songs and stories of years gone by - stuff they never heard of ! They are young enough to take part in this competition for 2/3 more years. Stick together lads and we will have great fun. The Script was written by Eileen McCarthy and coached by Eileen and Karen Trench. They now go forward to the All-Ireland in Athlone the last weekend in May and we are all looking forward to that. They can now enjoy a well-earned break and enjoy their Easter holidays and when the schools re-open we will commence training again. Well done to Patsy O'Connell on the professional manner with which she co-ordinated the above events. Congratulations to all the above and we in Listowel Community Games are extremely proud of your performances. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Johnny Mulvihill, Principal and Gerry Duggan, Caretaker of St. Michael's College for the continuous use of the College for all our training needs. It is very much appreciated by all in Community Games. ART - County finals of Community Games Art took place in Listowel Convent Primary and Secondary Schools last weekend . There was a very large attendance at this competition and Listowel had 14 Budding Artists taking part. As usual the standard is very high in this competition - certain areas seem to achieve an extremely high standard. Listowel achieved 1 placing and that was in the U.8 Girls when Cliona Pierse achieved 4th place for which she received a certificate. Congratulations to all who took part and we hope to see you all again next year. We would like to thank Joan Mulvihill, Principal and Caretaker Danny Enright for the use of the Convent Primary School and also Sr., Nuala, Principal and Caretaker, John Ryan, Convent Secondary School for the use of their schools for this competition and all the help and co-operation given by the Caretakers on the day. HURLING: Congratulations to Causeway Comp. on wining the B final last Weekend. Well done to all Ladies football ; Finuge/St.Senans senior ladies kicked off their county league campaign with a home game last sunday against milltown. Unfortunately the ladies were short a few strong players but despite this were in a strong position at half time with a six point lead. Indeed the home team would have been further ahead but for some over elaboration and wayward shooting . Milltown came out with renewed vigour in the second half and a mighty battle ensued. The game went from end to end with the usual drama and excitement but the end result a draw was probably the fairest . Our ladies whilst bitterly disappointed can only improve as they look forward to their next game vs austin stacks next saturday evening in tralee. u13 ladies ; The long awaited u13 county final between our ladies and local rivals Listowel finally takes place next sunday in tralee. time and venue to be confirmed but 3 o'clock at na gaeil pitch looks likeliest. This is a real David and Goliath affair with our local rivals Listowel overwhelming favourites. Listowel will be expected by all in the county to win easily but we can count on our girls to give everything for the cause. Best of luck to Johnny,Tim and the team from all in the locality. Supporters will be most welcome.
