Local Notes

Locals put on another special production

Wednesday December 02 2009

A LOCAL play, a local cast and a local audience made for the perfect combination at St John's Theatre over the past week as actors from Listowel and surrounding areas took to the stage for a seven night run of the John B. classic, 'Many Young Men Of Twenty'.

Having not graced the stage in Listowel since 1982, the musical comedy was warmly received by locals who packed St John's each night, with the talented cast putting on a truly remarkable performance.

As apt now as in the 1950s, the play dealt with the theme of emigration, with the cast of 17 drawn from the three local groups in Listowel as well as from the neighbouring drama groups in Lixnaw, Athea and Abbeyfeale.

While the majority of cast members were familiar to local drama audiences, with most of the current crew appearing in 'The Chastitute' last year, the lead role was perfectly executed by newcomer Claire Keane.

Taking her first active role as Peg, a demanding part with much singing, Claire mastered the task excellently, with her beautiful voice complementing her overall performance.

Other cast members included Tommy Deenihan, Fiona Keane-Stack, Batt O'Keeffe, Jim Griffin, Oliver McGrath, Frances Kennedy, Chris Fitzgerald, Tom Collins, Conor Foley, Bernie Daly, Sonny Egan, Denis Hobson, Darren McConnell, Sharon Farrelly, Rebecca Stapleton and Katie Neal.

Well done to all involved for a great show!
