Local students are honoured at function

STUDENTS from Castleisland Community College were honoured with achievement awards at a special function in Tralee Institute of Technology last Friday night.
This annual function recognises the outstanding achievements of students from the eight post primary schools run by Kerry Education Service. This year the awards were presented by Paul Griffin, the International Rowing Star who has represented Ireland at two Olympic finals.
Sinead Dunleavy, Currow, won an academic achievement award. In her citation, Principal Anne O'Sullivan said that she possesses all the attributes of an excellent student. She is capable, focused and determined. She was very organised and diligent and pursued her studies in a quiet, unassuming manner. She enjoyed an excellent relationship with her teacher, ancillary staff and her peers. She earned the respect of all in Castleisland Community College. Sinead secured over 500 points and is currently studying in Mary Immaculate College (primary teaching).
Thomas Hickey, Castleisland, won a special PE/Sports award. Thomas is an exceptional PE student who participates enthusiastically in all activities. A noted football and basketball player, Thomas is always eager for a new challenge. He is extremely co-operative and supportive in helping to organise a new range of PE activities.
He will complete the GAA TY Coaching skills course this year. He has won two All-Ireland 'A' basketball championship medals (first year and under-16) as well as numerous awards in other sports including a county championship minor medal with St. Kierans.
Eileen Foran was awarded a special merit achievement award. Eileen is an energetic and popular member of the school community. She faced personal battles on a daily basis with a smile and steely determination. Gaining her leaving certificate was a huge personal achievement for Eileen and a reflection of the determination with which she faces life. A determination she has no doubt carried with her into her social care studies. She was always so lively and engaging with her class mates and staff that she always lifted the spirit within the school.
The achievement of the school in winning three All-Ireland basketball titles was especially recognised. Maurice Casey, coach of the under-16 boys team that won the All-Ireland represented the coaches and manager and Tadhg O'Connell and Francis McAuliffe represented the players. The school also won first year and second year girls titles.
Other students from the Community College may also have their achievements recognised in the coming weeks by the Bank of Ireland student awards:
