IN a first for the Riding for the Disabled (RDAI) in Kerry, Listowel horse riding enthusiast Patrick Dunne will represent his county at the RDS on August 8.
Patrick, an autistic child who attends the North Kerry EquiFriends RDAI Group in Listowel through Nano Nagle School, will ride with his favourite pony, Joshua, making him the first ever Kerry representative in the RDAI ring at the RDS.
This is a major achievement for Patrick, and indeed all at the Listowel Equestrian Centre, from where the North Kerry Equi-Friends RDAI Group operate.
Patrick will be supported on his big day by a team of volunteer helpers, as well as volunteer coach Noelle Kielly.
Also offering support from the side lines on the day are 24 members of the Listowel Saddle Club, who are getting a coach up to Dublin for this momentous occasion.
Listowel Equestrian Centre owner, Wendy Brosnahan, explained that Patrick's outfit was graciously sponsored by Bridles and Bits, but added that if anyone would like to offer sponsorship towards the costs of transporting the pony up to Dublin, as well as Patrick's additional costs, they can call Patrick's mum Susan (087 7428019) or coach Noelle (087 7697658).
Congratulating Patrick on his wonderful achievement, Wendy also paid tribute to all those who works behind the scenes to make such dreams come true.
"I would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who help throughout the year and to the Saddle Club members who help to care for the animals who work so hard with special needs," she said. "In this current climate volunteers are essential to help keep services such as this running."
