A CHEQUE for over €5,000 was presented by the Darren and Donal Mulvihill Foundation to a charity working with the devastated children of Haiti following the massive earthquake of earlier this year. Part of the proceeds of their recent fundraiser also in aid of the Bee for Battens campaign in Listowel, through which the Foundation raised a massive €31,000.
€25,250 was presented to the Heffernan family some weeks ago in the Square and Friday night saw the group donate the rest to the Children of Haiti Charity at the New Kingdom Bar.
The connection with the charity comes through Duagh resident and Foundation member Jim Burke, whose daughter had been going out with Donal Mulvihill at the time of his tragic death. Originally from Portumna in Co Galway, Jim made the connection with Sr Mary Hardiman of the La Sainte Union Order — a native of his own homeplace — who is working with the stricken children on the ground. His connection with the order runs even deeper through his sister, Sr Úna Burke, who is Reverend Mother of the Order worldwide.
Run in memory of brothers Darren and Donal Mulvihill from Listowel, the campaign saw the Mulvihill family along with friends organising a bag-packing drive in Garvey's Supervalu, a sponsored climb of Carrauntoohill and a family fun day at Christy Walsh's Well Bar; all in the one weekend recently. A donkey derby was also organised in aid of the campaign.
"We were blown away with the response," Jim told The Kerryman. "The generosity of people in Listowel and North Kerry was something else, helping us raised over €31,000. We presented €25,250 to the Heffernan family and the other €5,250 is to be presented to the Children of Haiti charity," he added.
