HE may be nearing retirement age, but 64 year-old Listowel man Éamon Ó Murchú has just completed a marathon cycle around Ireland to raise funds and awareness for the Neuro fibromatosis Association of Ireland.

Éamon took on this gruelling four day challenge between Thursday and Sunday, where he tackled a total of 435 miles with eleven other cycling colleagues from Dublin, where he now lives.

The first leg of the journey was the longest one – 117 miles – taking the team from Mizen Head to Glengarriff, on to Molls Gap, Killarney and finally to Tralee.

On day two, Éamon set out for his native Listowel where he called in on his mother, Peg Murphy of Courthouse Road. After a cup of tea and some nice brown bread Éamon crossed the Shannon by ferry at Tarbert, from where the cycle took in the rugged and breathtaking coastline of Co Clare to include, Kilrush, Miltown Malbay, Lahinch, Cliffs of Moher, Black Head, and Ballyvaughan, finally stopping at Oranmore.

Heading off on day three, Éamon and his fellow cyclists traversed the famous N71, through Tuam, Claremorris and the undulating terrain via Knock and on to Sligo.

On Sunday, the crew journeyed through Bundoran, Donegal, Letterkenny, Quigley's Point, Buncranna on to Malin village from where they headed out the coastline on the final leg of the cycle to Malin Head.

Éamon and his fellow bikers raised substantial sponsorship for research into the complex condition of Neurofibromatosis. The hope is that one day a cure will be found for this genetic condition.
