PÁDRAIG Ó hAoláin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, will launch Tídil Eidil Éró on Saturday, December 12,at 2.30pm in Sean-Scoil an Chuasa, near Brandon Creek in West Kerry.
Tídil Eidil Éró is a collaborative project between the Curriculum Development Unit, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry.
The pack includes a book with illustrations, guidelines for singing, 2 CDs, notes and glossaries on the songs and video footage from the RTÉ archives.
The project is the culmination of five years development work with the teachers and their pupils, enhanced by the contribution of contemporary multi-media artists.
Another feature of this pack is the inclusion of a separate CD with the voices of traditional singers from Corca Dhuibhne with their versions of the same songs, many from RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta's archives.
Included are versions of six songs from the School's Manuscripts Collection in the The National Folklore Collection of University College Dublin.
The words of these songs were collected by school children with the guidance of their teachers in the late 1930's under the Irish Folklore Commission Schools' Collection Scheme.
Tídil Eidil Éró follows in the the path of Rabhlaí Rabhlaí 1998, a collection of traditional rhymes in Irish for children set to music by Steve Cooney and later by Scéilín ó Bhéilín, 2003, in a similar mode – traditional stories for children, all of which were developed in the belief that oral art forms are not a thing of the past but form an integral part of contemporary Irish and Irish –language culture.
Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Raidió na Gaeltachta, Foras na Gaeilge and The Arts Council Scheme Deis strongly supported this project.
