HALLOWEEN: Fortune smiled on the organisers of the annual Halloween Festival at the weekend with a most pleasant dry frosty night. Record crowds attended and all were very loud in praise of the ghost trail through the Well Road and the other side shows. The brainchild of Noreen Thompson Long it is now Ireland's leading Halloween festival. DEATHS: The death occurred last week after a long illness of Denis B O'Connor, Knockbrack Lower and Brosna. His remains were removed from O'Donnell's Funeral Home to Brosna parish church and burial was in the new cemetery, Brosna. In his late sixties Denis was known far and wide through his vast business dealings with various tractors. Along with his brother John and son Shane they virtually built an empire as far as selling trailers all over the country. A shrewd operator Denis was most obliging and if your own model was out of commission his cry was "take away that one while your own is being repaired". Many will recall Denis' first garage built by the late Mick Cud O'Connor using stone to the board on the left hand side of the main road as you left O'Leary Cross for Castleisland. As the business expanded Denis procured a site across the road where he erected a larger building. Buyers from every county came and dealt with him, many returning time out of number for another tractor. Denis was an outstanding mechanic and this served him well when trading in different models. He certainly will be missed but we have no doubt but his legacy will live on. Sympathy is extended to all his family and friends. Locals were saddened at the untimely death last week of Patrick Paddy Jerry O'Connor, Arrigeen. In his seventies Patrick's remains were waked at home for two days and nights before removal to Brosna parish church for the funeral mass Friday. Internment was in the new cemetery, Brosna. A popular member of the farming community Patrick was a great conversationalist and had a firm grasp of the local history and folklore. While he was a dedicated family man and farmer he had his hobby and that was playing music. This came naturally to him, as his father Paddy had no peer with fiddle. Along with his brothers, Donal and Billy he was renowned for sweet music. Patrick was a founder member of Brosna Ceili Band in the sixties, which went to claim All Ireland honours. That band did the circuit in dance halls in many counties. Patrick also was a member of Brosna wrenboys led by the late Paddy Fitzgerald who won All Ireland honours at Listowel on a number of occasions. It was fitting that Patrick would get a good send off and the beautiful music at the mass and graveside did that in style. Sympathy is extended to all Patrick's relatives especially wife Eileen, nee Keane, native of Knocknagoshel and his legion of friends.
