A MEDIEVAL sport of great skill that is an Olympic classic to this day could well become a staple of the Listowel sporting scene if the hopes of a new club are realised.
The simple bow and arrow, once an elegant hunting weapon and later lengthened into a lethal military instrument, continues to enthrall many. Happily, its graceful mechanics are enjoyed today solely for sporting purposes: in the world of archery.
For Listowel supplier of hunting equipment, Jim Halpin, it's one of the great disciplines. And, to share the joy of archery with all in town, Jim is now hoping to establish a dedicated club.
"It is a wonderful sport and it can be enjoyed by all ages, from the young to the old," he told The Kerryman. Jim even has an instructor lined up to initiate any newcomers into the correct use of a bow and arrow. For starters and once the bow is loaded, you are advised to point it away from your body.
After that the real skill comes into play.
"A few of us are hoping to get a club established now in town and we've a location in mind already, so it would be great to hear from anyone who may be interested.
"Archery is great on a number of levels, in terms of being a fun pastime and a sport that develops posture, co-ordination and discipline. It is still hugely competitive as well in so far as it is an Olympic sport with thousands of followers all over the world," he said.
Anyone interested in getting started in archery is advised to call into Jim Halpin's Shooting Supply shop on Church Street, or phone on (068) 22392.
