FOR some, becoming 50 can be a daunting experience. However, local man Gene McCarthy saw it as an opportunity to help others and decided that celebrating his birthday with family and friends at the Castleisland Rugby Club could be an opportunity to do more than have a few drinks and high jinks.
He saw the need of the victims and survivors of the Haiti Earthquake as more needy recipients of the goodwill of those who would be at the birthday bash.
With the agreement of the social events manager, Gerard Murphy, Gene decided to have a donation box on the bar counter. When the invitations were sent the guests were informed 'No Presents Please -a donation to the Haiti Appeal Box.'
Mr. McCarthy was totally astonished and amazed at the fact that his efforts raised a grand total of €2,048. All donations in the box were sent to 'Electric Aid' - an ESB staff charity.
Gene and his family wish to thank everybody who came to the bash and also a big thank you to Paddy Cassidy who provided great music on the night.
"All of the above helped to make it such a memorable and successful evening. To you all we say thank you very much." Gene concluded.
