THE Dingle senior football team had an impressive win over Austin Stacks in a top of the table Division 2 clash at Connolly Park on Saturday.
The win clinched their promotion to Division 1, which has been the club's main ambition for several years, according to Coiste na nÓg chairman Jimmy Bambury.
"It's great for Dingle to be back in Division 1. Dingle played superbly and Tommy Griffin was outstanding last Saturday and whenever he plays for us. Tommy and Diarmuid Murphy were the backbone of the team. It can be difficult for clubs with county players because you lose your senior players a lot during the year when they're tied up with training and playing for the county team, but now we're back in Division 1 with top teams such as Crokes and An Ghaeltacht. We're in the premier football county in Ireland and in the top level of club football within the county. It's the only place to be," he said.
The Dingle team is coached by Fergal Daly, Paul Scanlon and Paul Geaney. Robbie Griffin and Finten Ashe are the selectors and Murt Moriarty is the manager.
"It was our ambition from the start of the year to be promoted so it's the culmination of a hard year's work. We played 11 matches and it all came down to the final game. That game on Saturday was the biggest day of all. We have a young team and we want to play with the best that Kerry has to offer at club level. We want to push ourselves to the highest level. Playing agaimst the top teams every Sunday means your own team will always be improving," Murt Moriarty said.
Club chairman Maurice O'Connor is delighted with the promotion. "That was a tremendous win and a tremendous team performance. We didn't really expect to win because we had a few lads missing but so did Stacks. We have a lot of young lads coming up. We're winning West Kerry and county championships in all the underage categories so we have great confidence and great hopes for the future," he said.
