TRIP TO CROKE PARK: Last Tuesday 15th July 2008 was a historic day when for the first time a Crotta team graced Croke Park. Our Under 12 team played 4 matches against Cork opposition and acquitted themselves so well. They beat one team and were really close to two other teams (one being the famed Glen Rovers) at the final whistle. The four teams they played were St. Marys Mallow, Ballincollig (who they beat - this is a city team with a massive underage structure), Glen Rovers (how lovely to see a Crotta team side by side with this famous team who have 25 senior county titles) and Carrigtwohill (home of Cork senior Niall McCarthy). Our under 12 team is an Under 11 team with a couple of 12 year olds and 8 of the panel of twenty are Under 10. All players were delighted with the experience of playing in Croke Park and well done to the GAA for coming up with this initative. Thanks to Donal Daly in Kerry County Board. Donal is Secretary of the Kerry Coaching and Games Development Committee and made our day run very smooth in Croke Park. The following panel of players played on the day: Adam O'Sullivan, Thomas Quinlan, Darragh Ryan, Brandon Conway, Patrick Fahy(Capt), Adrian Mahony, David Behan, Darragh Regan, Barry Mahony, Raymond Nolan, Bill Keane, Tom McElligott, Sean O'Donoghue, Jordan Conway, Sean Gleasure, Donnacha Brosnan, Colin Browne, Darragh Kennelly, Cathal Kennelly, Ciaran Flanagan. Other players who are members of the panel but we could only play 20 players on the day are: Jamie O'Sullivan, Darragh Sheehan, Dominic Nolan, Aoife Behan, Danny Browne, Nathan Fahy, Mark Egan, Aaron Murnane, Dylan McElligott, Jack Glavin.and Daniel Quinland. The members of the panel received gear bags, hoodies and t-shirts. We were definitely one of the best kitted out teams on the day and thanks for this must go to the generousity of our sponsors. The Board na Nog Club would like to thank the following sponsors: Tommy and Margaret Fahy (sponsored the breakfasts and lunches for the children at the Racket Hall hotel, Roscrea), John and Pauline Gleasure (sponsored the gear bags), Patsy McKenna (sponsored the socks worn by the players on the day). We would like to say thanks to the following sponsors who were so generous in giving money to sponsor gear and other expenses on the day: Ciaran Donovan, Knocknacaska, Kilflynn, Martin Ryan, Knocknacaska, John O'Sullivan, Ahabeg, Lixnaw, Ballingarry House Hotel, Lorraine Flanagan, James (Sparky) and Kay Sheehan, Mike Neenan, Cyril Nolan, Padraig Connor, Rathea, Catherine Browne (Gleasure), Sonny Egan, Mike and Geraldine Parker, Brendan and Catherine Twomey, Pat and Joan Herbert. The total money raised to cover food, gear bags, socks and all other expenses was •2,500 approx which is unbelievable for a rural club in North Kerry hurling. Thanks again for making the day so special for all the children. Two coaches left the village at 6.10am (we had to wait a few minutes for our Bord na Nog Chairman!) and we had a great journey. One of the drivers was well known former Lixnaw hurler Willie Allen. Both buses were almost full and a great time was had by all. There was people of all ages. Callum Ryan was the youngest and the olderst passenger was Maureen O'Donoghue! Sonny and Willie provided the entertainment on the journey down. Naming names can be a bad thing at times but the following parents deserve a special mention: Sarah Nolan (Chairperson), Anne Mahony (booking bus and sponsorship money), Maura Egan (incharge of sponsorship), Pauline Gleasure (organising of coaches and food at hotel). All parents and grandparents who sold lottery tickets. A special word of thanks to Kathleen Quinlan who sold 140 lottery tickets in the bars in Kilflynn saturday and sunday evening. A special word of thanks also to the senior club and its Chairman Paud Twomey who loaned us money to make it all possible. It was a great experience for all and lets hope we get a chance again to see the boys in green and red represent out club on the hallowed turf.

CROTTA HURLING GEAR: At present the club has hurling shorts and jerseys for all ages from 5/6 to 13/14. Contact Paul O'Donoghue re: this gear. If anyone wants to order a hoodie or t-shirt like the ones worn in Croke Park then place your order with Paul or Jerome. These can be ordered in sizes from 7/8 to Adult sizes. GOLF: Abbeydorney Golf Society held an outing at the picturesque Ring of Kerry Golf Club Templenoe Golf Club last Saturday. We were blessed with a most beautiful day which made the views and scenery simply breathtaking. A total of 35 golfers took part and the scoring was excellent considering that this is such a tough course and the general consensus was that most members would like to come back here again next year. Our thanks to Mike McKenna of McKenna‚s Bar who sponsored the outing and the presentation of prizes took place in McKenna‚s Bar to whom we express our sincere thanks for their hospitality. Scores were definitely at a premium in the first half of this tough encounter which was played in poor conditions. The teams went in on level terms at half time, two points apiece was all both teams could manage which tells its own story. Lixnaw brought on Roibeard Thornton before half time and he put Lixnaw in front after the break with a great point from out near the side line. Abbeydoreny hit back with two points in succession before James Flaherty pointed from a free to level the match again. Steven Power relieved the pressure with a point which was quickly cancelled out. With ten minutes left on the clock James Flaherty put Lixnaw in the driving seat with a point from a free and Roibeard Thornton added his second to give his side breathing space. Abbeydorney came in search of a winning goal but a brilliant one handed save from Tony McCarthy in the Lixnaw goal ensured victory for Lixnaw by two points, 0-7 to 0-5 and mission accomplished. The performance of the athletic Keefer Roche at wing back was remarkable and he is developing into a quality player. Lixnaw play Crotta in ASP this Friday evening in the B final with a throw ñin time of 6-30pm. Team; Tony McCarthy, Declan McCarthy, Patrick Dowling, Patrick Hogan, Trevor McKenna, Keefer Roche, Paudie Lyons, Fergus Fitzmaurice, Kieran Dowling, Cillian Fitzmaurice, Raymond Galvin, Kevin Power, Padraig Fitzmaurice, Stephen Power, James Flaherty. Subs used Roibeard Thornton. Thanks to all who supported the Jane Power Fund which amounted to Ä450. Thanks also to the Ardfert club who gave their takings of Ä150 from their recent home game against Lixnaw to add to the fund. Minors; After a poor start the minors settled down to overcome the Ardfert challenge to eventually record a 0-18 to 2-4 win. Brendan Brosnan had four first half points for Lixnaw and one each from Liam Power and Conor Fitzmaurice left Lixnaw two points in arrears at the break, 2-2 to 0-6. Lixnaw dominated the second half and outscored Ardfert by 0-12 to 0-2. Keefer Roche pointed for Lixnaw in the first minute and Brendan Brosnan added two points from placed balls to put Lixnaw in front and there they stayed. They went on from there to press home their advantage firing over some delightful points to pull away from Ardfert. Brendan Brosnan was outstanding for Lixnaw at centre back and he also accounted for eleven of Lixnaws eighteen points which is a decent days work any day of the week. Team; Martin Stackpoole, Dominic Kissane, Tomas OíKeeffe, David Kissane, Dylan Roche, Brendan Brosnan, Raymond OíConnell, Keefer Roche, Jonathan Silles, Greg OíConnor, Niall Quilter, Russell Cleary, Conor Fitzmaurice, John Vincent OíBrien, Liam Power. Scorers; Brendan Brosnan; 0-11. Keefer REoche; 9-3. Niall Quilter; 0-2. Liam Power; 0-1. Conor Fitzmaurice; 0-1. U16s; A win over Ballyheigue would have given Lixnaw a place in the final of the North Kerry league but it wasnít to be. Ballyheigue had too many aces for a Lixnaw team who were a bit disappointing on the evening. Ballyheigue were well out of sight by the time it was all over and deserved their 2-9 to 1-3 win in the end. Juniors; The juniors had the expected 2-14 to 1-6 easy win over a struggling Austin Stacks and remain unbeaten in division three of the county league. They play St Pats in Lixnaw this Wednesday and a win here will give them a place in the final even though they still have a back game against Crotta to play. KERRY HURLERS; The Kerry hurlers made a tame exit from the Christy Ring cup when they went down badly to Carlow by 2-4 to 1-14. John Griffin, Michael Conway and Mike Quilter were on the Kerry team LOTTO; The results of the Lixnaw Hurling club Lotto draw are as follows; Numbers Drawn; 5,8,17,19. This was one of the hardest games the team has experienced to date in the competition. The visitors fielded a strong physical side and were in complete control for most of the opening half. Tarbert

CHURCH CELEBRATIONS: Tarbert parishioners came out in their hundreds last weekend to join in the church celebrations to mark its 175 year in existence. It was great that Bishop Bill Murphy was able to attend the opening of the celebrations which got under way at 8pm on Friday July 18, a number of Clergy based overseas also made the journey home to be with us for the event. Dr. Declan Downey gave us a most interesting insight into the early life of the Christian Community in Tarbert and its link with the early church in Scattery Island. Professor John Coolahan then brought us through the later centuries and gave us a synopsis of what life was like during penal times and how the church coped. He also gave us an insight into the great advancements that took place during the 1830s in Tarbert by way of church, school and commercial buildings that were embarked upon. The Kiely family and Thomas Dillane joined forces with the senior choir and those in attendance were treated to some beautiful music and singing. In the community hall the organizers had some very old memorabilia on display. Those in attendance were invited to partake of some delightful consumable fare prepared by the organizers of the event. It is right and fitting that we should say a heart felt thank you to those ladies who gave of their time. Sunday July 20, was another great day of celebrating. The church was packed to capacity for the noonday mass which was concelebrated by Bishop Eddie Carmody and several priests who were born in Tarbert parish were also present. Fr. Francis Nolan P.P. took on the roll of chief organizer for the celebrations and according to what the people are saying, he did a splendid job. After mass it was on to the sports field were a marquee had been erected and an array of delicious food was available free of charge, and served by the Lanterns Hotel staff. Where would you get the likes of it? There were various forms of sporting events all through the afternoon and Big Maggie once again proved a big hit with her own special brand of entertainment. As twilight took over from daylight the happy crowd began to move homewards and a wonderful occasion faded into the pages of history. Well done to all who organized, or helped in any way to make the event possible.

DEATH: Parishioners were shocked to learn of the untimely death of the very popular Aidan Holly, of Chapel Street, while holidaying in Spain. Aidan was only 23 years of age but he was a man who lived life to the full and he packed more into his short lifetime than most people do in a lifespan of many more years. He was an outstanding cyclist and decided on the Army as a career and was stationed at Collins Barracks Cork. Aidan was accorded Full Military Honours at his funeral service and very senior Officers were in attendance. The Army and Navy Chaplin concelebrated requiem mass with Fr. Francis Nolan P.P. Tarbert and other local clergy. When Aidan had been laid to rest, in the new section of the cemetery beside the church, a 21 gun salute was enacted and two buglers sounded the last post as a final farewell to the popular soldier. Aidan is survived by: his parents Con and Marie, sister Orla, Brothers David and Conor; Uncles, Aunts, relatives and friends to whom our most sincere sympathy is extended. They stood to attention, as the bugles were blown, and Paradise beckoned a soldier come home. GAA Lotto: We are back to basics again with no Jackpot Winner this week.
