THE LATE JOHN OCARROLL: Death is never easy to accept but when it comes prematurely, it is extra difficult to understand. Consequently it was with great sadness the sportspeople throughout Kerry heard of John O Carroll from Ballyduff on Friday 27th April.
Crotta Hurlers first encountered John O Carroll (and his brother Mike) when he burst onto the Ballyduff Senior hurling team in 1973.
John "Ban" with his long blonde hair and swashbuckling style-Reminiscent of Corks John Horgan- broke the hearts of many Crotta forwards over the next fifteen years. The youthful John who appeared indestructible on the field was fear, tough and uncompressing as a defender, but was gentle soul and wonderful character off the field.
A genuine passionate sportsman whose love for all sport continued right to the end.
For Crotta people John was special as he always shared their company after games. Definitely that unique bond shared between great rivals in the hurling fields of North Kerry strengthened over the decades. So it was only fitting that John wished to borne to his final resting place by former Crotta players.
John is probably now playing backs and forwards with another great warrior of that era- Todd Nolan.
To his wife Una, Sons Stephen and Brian, daughters Niamh and Aoife, Brothers Mike, Patrick, and Anthony, Sisters Anne, relatives, friends and his teams mates to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
John may you rest in peace under the gentle sod of your native Ballyduff.

CROTTA ONEILLS 2 11 KILMOYLEY 2 15. At Dromakee on Saturday evening last a very much understrength local side made Kilmoyley work hard for a victory that would see them crowned County Senior Hurling League Champions for 2007. Crotta, who lined out without Tom & Pádraig Cronin, Andrew & Martin Keane, Matt Lynch and Paul Culhane made all the early running and had 1 3 on the board before Kilmoyley opened their account in the 7th minute with a Shane Brick point. A goal 3 minutes into the second quarter brought the visitors back into the game and with half time approaching they held a slender 1 9 to 1 8 lead but a Sean Twomey penalty goal saw the home deservedly lead by two points, 2 8 to 1 9, at the interval.
The early stages of the second half were evenly contested before an Edward Fitzgerald goal gave Kilmoyley a lead they would not lose. However Crotta contributed to their own downfall by some erattic shooting in front of goal. Kilmoyley won out in the end without firing on all cyclinders and are League champions following a change to the structures for this year only which means that the top team in the League are champions and the next three join them in the North Kerry Senior A Hurling Championship. The four bottom teams in the League will participate in the North Kerry Senior B Hurling Championship in 2007.
Crottas outstanding player on the night, Ian McCarthy, opened the scoring within a minute when he pointed a free from halfway. Sean Twomey followed with a point from play while in the 5th minute Pete McGrath got in for the first goal of the game. Birthday Boy Colm McElligott fired over a fine point soon after to increase the home sides lead. Shane Brick opened the visitors account with a point from play and this was followed shortly by a similar score from Edward Fitzgerald. Brick and McCarthy exchanged wides before Fitzgerald got on for his second point of the game. Brick was on target from a placed ball before Ian McCarthy fired over a point from play and a free to extend Crottas lead at the end of the first quarter. James McCarthy, playing at full forward, latched on to a loose ball in the 18th minute and goaled from close range to reduce the margin to the minimum. Ian McCarthy and Shane Brick exchanged pointed frees and McCarthy added two more to put Crotta 1 8 to 1 5 ahead with five to go to the break. Kilmoyley took control and two points each from Brick and Micheál Regan saw them take the lead with time almost up. In injury time Sean Twomey was dragged down in the area and he rattled the net from the resultant penalty. Edward Fitzgerald had a great chance of a goal at the other end but lost possession at the vital time. Crotta took a two point lead into the interval.
Sean Maunsell and Ian McCarthy exchanged early second half points as did Colin Harris and Francis Keane within five minutes of the restart. Both sides swapped wides before Edward Fitzgerald goaled following good work mby Paul McCarthy and Shane Brick. The home side hit two wides from scoreable positions before Shane Brick pointed after a foul on himself for which Brendan OMahony was yellow carded. Wides followed at either end before Brick pointed a 65 to leave three points between the sides with 12 minutes remaining. Ian McCarthy got one back for the home side soon after when he pointed following a foul on Shane Nolan. Kilmoyley substitute Maurice Murnane sent over the score of the game when he pointed from the right touchline after a solo run. Both sides missed some chances before Shane Brick made the game safe for Kilmoyley three minutes from time when he pointed a 20 metre free following a high tackle oh himself. Crotta were reduced to 14 men when Brendan OMahony received his second yellow card from referee Pat Sheehy following the foul on Brick. This was the last score of the game as Kilmoyley held on for victory.
