Cllr. Danny gushing about the water in the fountain

Wednesday July 28 2010

DON'T the ironies of life just make you want to laugh out loud sometimes? The residents of Tralee Road are scratching their heads in disbelief this week as yet another stretch of their water supply pipe gave up the ghost on Sunday night. It couldn't take the pressures it was being put under. On the other hand – and only a hundred or so yards away – the supply to The Fountain was cut off by a combination of accident and ignorance in the early 1990s. And, ironically, wastage of a precious commodity has been brazenly offered as an excuse for letting it so. Ah boys.

There had been a trickle for a while since but now the old gathering place of such great renown is dry and deserted and a fitting symbol of our badly blackguarded little country at present. But hark! Help is at hand – alas for The Fountain only.

Cllr. Danny Healy-Rae sent a brief note during the week to say the water would be flowing from The Fountain soon and that was that.

He didn't say how or when or by what route the supply was going to approach – just that it would happen. I know that reminds you of the way the country is being run at the moment - but I believe that Cllr. Danny is genuinely going to do something about it and I believe he'll produce the goods.

I look forward to the day that campaigner, champion and neighbour of The Fountain, Anthony Cronin will place a sweet gallon under the noble spout and have it filled with cool, clear water. That will be a great day and temporary pledges will be broken as the water from the canister is added to a small drop in an adjacent public house and all will be well with the world for a while.

I was in the south-eastern French town of Limoux early last year and my attention was drawn to a set-up similar to our fountain. A little cobbled stream ran through the town and fed a little fountain. It danced and sang and overflowed at the other side of the town square feature and carried on winding its merry way through the streets and back to the nearby river from which it was taken. The stream was covered in places where access was needed. I believe it was all solar power driven and not a drop of water wasted. Our little landmark of old could be easily supplied in similar fashion from our equally adjacent river – if the will was there.
