AS another Community Games season draws to an end, local secretary, Brid Kenny looks back on the final two weekends of activity: "First up was Brian O'Sullivan in the swimming. This was Brian's last year to compete and he was defending his U16 backstroke title from last year and once again won the Gold medal. Brian has competed at every age level from under-8s to under-16s at the community games level and the committee involved would like to wish him all the best in the future.
"In athletics, Adam Donoghue competed in the under-12 x 600m on Saturday he ran a great semi-final, pacing himself well and was fourth. In his final on Sunday there were some old rivals in the race but Adam had his sights set only on the gold. Coming up the last 100 metres Adam and Robert Crowley from Carlow were neck and neck but Adam had the experience and won this final in style.
"Next up was the under-11 mixed basketball team. This was the first year of this particular competition, The Castleisland team met eventual winners Kiltimagh in the semi-final. This was a very tight and hard fought game with the Co. Mayo side winning by two points grabbed in the last few seconds.
"Castleisland went on to beat St. Patrick's of Cavan in the bronze medal play-off.
Team: Laobhaoise Wamsley and Dominic Prendiville, joint captains, Anna Lynch, Aoife O'Connor, Juileanne O'Connor, Laura Fleming, David Shanahan, David Riordan, Eamon Nolan and Sean O' Connell. They were coached by Miriam Leane.
"The boys' U-13 basketball team also met eventual winners, Oranmore/Maree of Galway. This was a strong team with Eoin Rockhall leading the play all through the game leaving the final score at: Castleisland 29, Oranmore 55. Castleisland played Donagh of Monaghan in the placings final and won this game 44-19.
