Boatyard site 'needs a facelift'

Wednesday February 03 2010

DINGLE'S Tidy Towns committee is in discussions with Kerry County Council in an effort to improve the appearance of the fenced-off area fronting the former boatyard site.

The council erected a wooden hoarding along the Strand Street frontage of the site some years ago but that has become somewhat dilapidated in appearance in recent times.

"We want the council to push back the hoarding and create an amenity area with seating along the Strand Street side. We have had discussions with the council about this and are hoping that some improvements will be made soon," Dingle Tidy Towns committee member Dick Williams told The Kerryman this week.

Meanehile, Mr Williams said the committee is 'quite satisfied' with the results of the 2009 Tidy Towns competition which saw Dingle increase its points score over 2008.

"The increase was almost entirely due to the excellent improvements carried out by the council at the entrance to the town where we now have a new roundabout with artworks and sculptures and a new road to John Street. We have plans to get a good project going for next year but it will cost a lot of money," he said. However, he would not elaborate on these plans.

The Green and Gold Wren presented the committee with a cheque for €500 which was collected around the town on St Stephen's Day.

"This €500 is as good as €5,000 to us right now," Mr Williams said as he accepted the donation from Fergus O'Flaherty of the Green and Gold Wren on Wednesday.
