Autumn workshops to cover many literary genres

Wednesday August 05 2009

LISTOWEL'S Seanchaí centre has announced details of its upcoming Autumn writing workshops, which will run over four weekends in October and November.

Organised in conjunction with Kerry County Council, the workshops will concentrate on four separate disciplines including poetry, fiction, children's fiction and short stories.

The first course focusses on poetry and will be overseen by award-winning poet Medbh McGuckian. Participants are asked to bring along samples of their work and the workshop will compare some Irish male poets with some female voices.

Poems by Mahon, Heaney, Longley and Montague and then some British and Irish women will be discussed during the course, which runs on October 10 and 11.

Next up is the fiction course, and will be directed by acclaimed writer Patricia O'Reilly on October 17 and 18.

This workshop is tailored to the individual writer and includes exercises, analysis and discussion on how to create a successful piece of fiction.

Participants may e-mail a sample of their work (max. 1,000 words) and short synopsis in advance to patricia@patriciaoreilly.net.

Aspiring JK Rowlings will be very interested in the children's fiction workshop, which will be directed by children's writer and illustrator Oisín McGann on October 24 and 25.

This course is designed to help you build your story in an engaging and dynamic way, with practical exercises and a final writing task to be completed at the end of the weekend.

Finally, novelist, short story writer and playwright, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, will host a short story workshop on November 14 and 15, which aims to encourage participants to enjoy creating short stories and give them a greater understanding of this great literary genre.

A brief history of the short story and overview of its main forms will be followed by practical exercises and discussion. Participants will have an opportunity to write during the workshop.

The fee per weekend workshop is €120 and more details are available on from the Seanchaí centre on 068 21222 or www.kerrywritersmuseum.com
