Local Notes

Asdee

Wednesday October 28 2009

Local fowlers have been out on the shooting ranges during the week as they try to enhance their marksmanship for the beginning of the new pheasant shooting season. Gunfire should ring around the local countryside this Sunday November 1st when the season kicks off. According to locals pheasants are very scarce in the area so there should be very keen competition for the limited amount of birds that are in circulation. However birds will take centre stage at Jesse James Tavern on Sunday night when the hunt goes on to select the longest cock pheasant shot on the opening day of the season. The hugely popular event is being promoted by Joe Dee of Jesse James Tavern and as always it will be a night of great fun and craic. ST PIO PRAYER MEETING: The local St. Pio Prayer Group will hold their monthly Prayer Meeting at St. Maryís church on Thursday night November 5th at 7pm followed by Mass at 8pm. HALLOWEEN FANCY DRESS: Halloween will be celebrated in traditional style in the parish this year with some of the old traditions of the past being re enacted next weekend. Jesse James Tavern will be a spooky place on Saturday night October 31th when a big Fancy Dress night will be held to celebrate Halloween. All age groups are being entertained with proceedings kicking off at 7pm with a Children's Party and Fancy Dress parade. Then later in the night those a bit longer in the tooth will be in the catwalk with good prizes to be won by the entrants that catch the eyes of the judges. Joe Dee is drafting in a panel of judges to oversee proceedings and anyone that is apprehensive of the ghostly atmosphere can avail of some Dutch Courage from inside the bar. By all accounts many locals were spotted shopping at the weekend for spooky attire so a very spectacular and colourful night is on the agenda to celebrate Halloween. So if you have not bought your attire for the night put it on your shopping list without delay. A fine selection of Halloween gear can be bought at the Gift Shop in the Supervaule Supermarket in Listowel.
