YOUTH CLUB: At a public meeting years ago, at which the Sports Hall was proposed to the community, a committee member told the story of how his daughter's soccer team rented the hall in Camp to improve for a community games competition, and the use of such a facility paid off as it helped her team win the county and the right to travel to Mosney where they won bronze All-ireland medals. The point of his story was that if we had such a facility in Annascaul we would put the children of the parish on a more level playing field with the rest of the county and indeed country. It is a testimony to the new Sports Hall that this year, which is the third year since the Youth Club in Annascaul was re-established, all three of our teams qualified as West Kerry champions, and competed at county level for a chance to represent Kerry nationally. Our first year none of our teams qualified, and last year we sent two teams to Killarney. This year we had an Under 18 Boys team, an Under 15 Boys team and an Under 15 Girls team compete, and our Girls Team brought home trophies for first place from Killarney, and will now travel to Donegal for the All-ireland final in June. The U18 Boys Team met the "Connect-7" Tralee champions in the semi-final round of their competition. Tralee scored an early first goal, but Cian Kennedy equalized early in the second half and the teams were drawn 1-1 up until just a few seconds before the final whistle, when a late Tralee goal knocked our lads out of the competition. Team members were: Gearoid Sayers (in goal), Paddy Daly, William Smith, Daniel O'connell, Aidan Cox, Cian Kennedy and John Joe Landers. Well done to all the lads, who showed a great commitment over the past few months training for first the West Kerry finals, and then the county finals, and a special thanks to their manager, Paul Whelehan, who also showed great commitment and inspired the team with his enthusiasm and positive outlook. The U15 Boys Team met Ballydonoghue in the first round of their competition and were knocked out with a final score of 5-1, with our goal coming from Jerry Foley. The team members were: Alan Falvey (in goal), Cian Campion, Conor Counihan, Jerry Foley, Max Kennedy, Padraig Moriarty, Timmy Smith and Jack O'connor. Well done to these lads also, as this team too showed great commitment over the past few months, and trained diligently under the management of Jason Hickson and Gary Counihan. The U15 Girls Team met Sneem in the semi-final round of their competition, and after 4 goals from Clodagh Mckenna and two from Niamh Kennedy, finished on a scoreline of 6-0 to move on to the final. There they met old rivals Listowel, who had beaten them last year in the final round of this same competition. This year was to be different, however, and the teams were drawn 11 at full time thanks to a goal for us from Katie Ferriter. Then in extra time Clodagh scored again but Listowel equalized and the game went to penalties. A cool Nell O'connor in goal stopped all but one of Listowel's efforts, while Katie, Clodagh and Niamh scored for us and that resulted in a jubilant victory for Annascaul. Team members are: Nell O'connor (in goal), Clodagh Mckenna, Hannah Mccarthy, Aoife Falvey, Niamh Kennedy and Katie Ferriter. A big thanks goes to Jason Jickson and Gary Counihan for managing this team, as well as the U15 Boys team, and encouraging them on to great performances. Best of luck to the Girls Team as they move forward to the All-ireland round of this Youth Club competition. Thanks also to Rose Hickson, Susan O'connell and Eileen Kennedy for travelling to Killarney as Leaders with the teams.
