Well done to our Trench Cup winners

Wednesday March 10 2010

SENIOR FOOTBALL

Congratulations to the IT Tralee Senior Football team that won the 2010 Trench Cup last weekend in Maynooth when they beat Trinity College in the final.

This is a great achievement by the lads and great credit is due to all the players and their management team of John Sugrue, James Prendergast and William Harmon for all the hard work that they have put in throughout the year.

Overall, this was a great win for IT Tralee. The decision to go from Sigerson to Trench this year was a big one but one that we can now say was the correct one. The decision was taken in order to hopefully start winning a few games again and to try and bring a bit of pride back in to playing football with IT Tralee.

We feel that we have now achieved this and once again I personally would like to thank John Sugrue, James Prendergast and William Harmon for the work that they put in, in trying to achieve this.

Finally, on behalf of the players and management, I would like to thank our sponsors Kings Court student village and John McHale "The Stretford End Bar" Causeway as well as all those who donated to us for the weekend.

In the semi final ITT overcame the Garda College on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-2 in what was a very impressive Tralee performance.

The ITT defence were well on top throughout with Kilkenny senior player Edwina Keane in great form at centre back, while Orlaith Murphy, Megan Moran and Ailish Considine proved too hot up front for the Garda defence to handle.

IT Tralee had now qualified to meet DIT in the final on Sunday. DIT had defeated Mary Immaculate College, Limerick by a point on the Saturday in their semi-final. However, disaster was to strike as early as the first minute for IT Tralee when DIT got in for an early goal. ITT then raised their game and Orlaith Murphy sent over four points and and was unlucky with a couple of others, while Mairead Fitzgerald's goalbound effort was put out for a 45. DIT added one more point during this half and as it stood things were nicely poised as the sides went in at the break.

On the resumption, DIT improved while Tralee seemed to come to a standstill as Danielle Sheedy registered their only score of the 30 minutes. In the end it was a strong second-half performance by DIT that enabled them to take victory as IT Tralee were able to offer little in the way of resistance.

IT Tralee are still involved in the Camogie League however and can still salvage some success this year. Great credit is due to the management team of John Fitzgerald, Marie Atkins and Padraig Moriarty for the way they had the team organised for the weekend. Finally, on behalf of all the players and management, I would like to thank our sponsors Kings Court student village.

IT Tralee Scorers: O Murphy 0-4 (0-3f, 0-1 45), D Sheedy 0-1.

SENIOR HURLING

IT Tralee senior hurling team have qualified for the Ryan Cup weekend to be held in Galway on March 5-6.

After receiving a walkover in the semi-final from Mary Immaculate College Limerick in the quarterfinal last Wednesday week, ITT will now meet Carlow IT in the semi final on Friday March 5.

The Ryan Cup weekend is being hosted by NUIG this year and it is hoped that the Tralee lads can repeat the success of the footballers and have a successful weekend. This would be just reward for the ITT senior hurlers as they have been very unlucky over the last two seasons. Best of luck to everyone involved with the team.

IT Tralee Fresher hurlers defeated Queens University Belfast this week in the semi final of the Fresher Hurling Division 2 Championship. ITT won on a scoreline of 4-17 to 4-8. They will now meet Mary Immaculate College Limerick in the final next Tuesday.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Best of luck to the ITT Ladies Football team who play in Giles Cup semi-final next week.

ITT play the NUI Maynooth in the semi final and if successful will advance to meet the winners of WIT and St. Marys Belfast in the final on March 21st. The Giles Cup is a new competition this year and it is hoped that the Tralee girls can go a long way in it. Best of luck .
